*saddles up on high horse*
you get what you pay for, yet another example why
it still boggles my mind, how guys will buy expensive cars but then half ass on the wheels, i.e
subaru sti > take off bbs forged wheels stock, put on rotas
350z > take off rays track wheels, put on tenzo r's
and now, this audi guy, with ADR's

One of my buddies drifted over a rumble strip and cracked his 3 spoke ADVAN in half. I agree when it comes to something supporting the weight of your vehicle don't go cheap. But sometimes you have no control over things like this.

yea ADR's have a history of problems like this, my buddies did the exact same thing, except on the freeway, thank god he wasnt near anybody, and he got to the shoulder safely.

im thinking a lot of rim manufacturers would have sustained a degree of damage to the point of danger in this certain case...i love how one of the audi guys suggested SSRs and HREs...too bad SSR comps bend like crazy and HREs arent even approved for the track...i saw a 2005+ bimmer 5 series rim at my friends shop do the exact same thing except the damage was 360 on the barrel...i think it was a huge pothole too...it may have been a 2x4 or even a 4x4

Yep, way back in 01 I bought some ADR M classics or whatever the hell they were called for my first 240. Needless to say, I was super dissapointed in them. I couldn't stand the fake rivets and the finish was peeling after like a month of ownership. Lesson learned; don't buy adr or better yet, don't buy cheap garbage in general.

Sooner or later the corners you cut add up. If you spend money on your car, don't let the ONLY PART THAT TOUCHES GROUND the cheapest.

Agreed. That's why I buy good/excellent tires.

I never roll on shitty tires. That's just me. It's probably why I can never afford new ones. :(

Someone upload the picture of the bmw M roadster riding on the spokes... I saw it someone on the Bimmer Forums. BMW OEM alloy wheel snapped at all of the spokes so it looked like it was riding on a star.

What kind of process does ADR use to make wheels? If they were forged like Rays that kinda damage wouldnt of happened huh?

Most cheap companies don't forge their rims, to keep costs down.

enkei and ssr use semi forging technology...
aznpoopy
08-27-2006, 03:41 PM
enkei uses MAT process. it stands for 'most advanced technology'.
all i know is it involves spinning during manufacture, which changes the internal structure of the aluminum to more closely resemble forging. i.e. minimal amount of aluminum without compromising strength.

yeah, you know what i meant...after all the stupid names are said and done, both companies combine the forging and casting processing...

shit ishould sell my emos soon then
sw20>>s14
08-28-2006, 03:01 PM
why? just because they arent forged? there are still superior and inferior methods within the category of casting wheels...some have better casting processes than others...you wouldnt have to worry about works ability to cast a competent wheel...

Another wheel eaten by bay area freeways!!! damm, that Definitly cannot be fixed!

08-30-2006, 02:25 PM
just cause something says its forged doesnt mean its good
there are different types of forging, which are beyond me since im not an engineer, but regardless
cast can be just as strong, if not stronger than forging, but it all depends on the process
you can buy crappy wheels, but as long as you realize they are crappy and dont expect much, then it works haha

This reminds me of the wrx that ripped the spokes off the barrell what looked like an autox event. Anyone have pics still? I think they were the 57f wannabes.

me and my friend bought some steelies for his car back in the day, it was a subaru. anywayz we painted them orange and put some racing slicks on them, half way through the day the wheel broke and all 5 lug nuts were still holding the center of the rim to the hub...the rest of the wheel flew off causing his rear end to kick up in the air about 6 feet of the ground then back down luckily nothing was around him and he could keep the car grounded after that.
