dont quote me but i thought all KA24DE trannys were the same. maybe not? check about bolt pattern and stuff. do a lil research. sorry ive never worked on a KA so i ahve no idea...
just check the clutch to see if its too fucked up. altho i suggest u replace the clutch while the trannys out anyways.
you can check the drain plugs for metal shavings...but without disecting the thing, i dont think theres much u can look for.
its a total crapshoot basically but, odds are its in decent condition, if not atleast its only a KA tranny. get another for a bill..

there isn't much you can do to check out a tranny while it's sitting around. put something into the shifter and gently push it into all 5 gears and reverse. should be able to go into all gears. it'll be a little tough since the tranny is cold and dry. not much you can do besides that.
the drain plug will invariably be covered with metal shavings. it's normal.
edit: s14 vs s13 5spd. iirc the s14 has one more sensor than the s13. look it up yourself though. i'm not sure on it. i just remember reading it

on the top of the bellhousing look for a sensor. It will be in the very front up top. It's called the crank position sensor. If that's there, then it's an s14 tranny, if it's not there, then it's an s13 tranny. Good luck and if u have more ?'s just ask. peace
