just got a redtop sr20det from Japanese Engine Imports in northern va, looked stock with exception of short shifter. Took valve cover off and bam, tomei cams!, then i took the heatshield off to discover a larger HKS turbo bolted directly to the t25 flange.
ill get some pics i just pressure washed the thing.
for anyone in va/md/dc wanting an sr20det i highly recommend Japanese Engine Imports pm me if you want theyre phone number or you can look it up on the web, i tested over 3 sr20dets by jumping the starter and each had 155-160 PSI on each cylinder cold, and the greatest part is $2000 for a complete sr swap
quck question, the turbo on the car says HKS on the compressor housing, has no numbers, the turbine side said GARRETT t647 0.86 I know its not a 0.86 a/r it looks too small, does anyone know what turbocarger this is???

damn man nice find, well, it's kinda hard to tell what the turbo is without pictures, so when you get some hook us up, but great find again.

It most likely is a .86 A/R. The stock tiny t25 is .86 A/R.

My thoughts exactly. I purposely stayed away from the clip that had the boost controller, Apex'i and Option stickers, and the HKS sticker on the valve cover. It probably had some great parts on it, but I'm already buying a 15 year old engine, I want to know it was totally stock and driven very gingerly.
So I chose the one with all the EGR still on it, rhinestones on the shift boot trim, and purple glitter nail polish in the glove compartment.

it can work both ways. either it could be a babied stock motor or you could have had some idiot who changed the oil every 20k miles and never had any maintenance done to it. just cuz its stock doesnt mean its been taken care of.

^Well I guess that's why I relied on compression/leak down test numbers to see if the motor seemed strong or not.

Im with Scottman on this one. Compression test each motor before choosing.
In my head, the motor that is modified are usually taken care of, but are abused regardles. The stock one can be abused or not and taken care of or not.

wow. good find man :) id say take it to a machine shop and have them replace some of those gaskets.. but id bet my left nut that someone already did that. anybody who buys Tomei is a different kind of customer.. u know what i mean? u can tell how somebody is as a person by how they hook up their cars. having an hks turbo and tomei cams goes a long way. good luck :)

I agree with the guys who like them stock, as I do as well.
theres alot more that can go wrong with a modified motor rather than an unmodified motor.
there are alot of fools out there who do hackjobs and these aren't any exceptions.
anyways, good luck with it

Neither do most guys.
I still can't believe so many of you guys would rather have an upgraded turbo, boost controller, etc. on your clip. You know it's been driven hard if it comes with that stuff, and coil-overs, etc. At least with my motor I have a chance it's been driven slowly.

And what do you plan on doing with it? Driving it hard? That's what I thought. As long as the comp is ok I wouldn't worry about mods.

i second that girls dont my friend got a non-running 240 with a blown motor and we thought it was the headgasket but it had a hole the size of a golf ball on one side of the block and one the size of a baseball on the other, and piston 3 was in peices and the rod was bent in a J shape. the driver was a girl and i have no clue how she did it.

I'm probably totally crazy in thinking this, but in fantasy world I think of each motor as having a finite amount of revs, or time, or whatever unit of measure for how much it can take of hard driving, boosting, etc. If I buy a motor that has been run at 300whp for two years, my strange logic makes me think it might not last too much longer at 300whp.
However, in my opinion, a motor that is relatively virgin, is totally stock (like mine was), and was babied and never shifted over 4500rpm will last that 2 years plus at 300whp before blowing. Sure, freak things can happen, but a motor can only take so much abuse. High revs and boost are what I would classify as abuse. I'll take any extra time I can get.
So yes, I drive my car hard, but I think the babying it received early in life will allow me to drive it hard for longer before it succombs to the abuse.
I might be wrong, but it's how I think.
