View Full Version : For Sale by Zip Code?

It would be super cool if there was a way to search for sale items by zip code (i.e. force new posts include a zip code somehow), so people can easily find stuff nearby (an XX mile radius).

Just a thought. Zilvia is waaay too popular for me to weed through & find stuff near me (michigan ain't exactly crawling w/nissans)...

Change your tampon and suck it up. We have been doing it long before your 2 posts. Or use the search button. *a

Breaking it down that much isn't feasible from a logistics standpoint. We have the For Sale Section broken down far enough as it is, no need to cause extra clutter. Basically what I'm trying to say is, NO.

yea, do u know how many zip codes there are in a single state alone? i dont but i know mine is 23325, so there are at least that many more before mine lol, it would be a good idea if this were like a regional or state forum, but its an international one including members from all parts of the globe.

I wasn't thinking breakdown, just some way to force people to tell you where the stuff they're selling is, then sort by distance - think "items within xx miles" checkbox on ebay.

Seems to me it would make MORE sense for some sort of vicinity feature on an international website. It's not a number of zipcodes problem, it's a "is this for sale item near me?" problem.

But I know zilvia isn't ebay. And clearly I'm an asshole for posting this in the "suggestions" section...

maybe its more sense to you...but...its not worth it.

It's not a number of zipcodes problem, it's a "is this for sale item near me?" problem.
thats why you put a WTB ad listing your location. thats why people put their locations in their posts, along with their zipcodes! you are trying to make something complicated, when it doesnt need be.

No one is calling you an asshole. I just explained why it isn't a good idea. I appreciate your attempt to help make Zilvia better in your eyes, but I just don't think this particular idea will work. Again, thank you, but no. I'm sorry.

Complicated for zilvia = easy for me ;)

Sorry, my troll->English translator somehow got "asshole" out of '90Silvia's helpful contribution...

But seriously thank you for your calm and reasoned response. Just figured I'd throw an idea out there.

hey my zip is close to u, want to buy my car for 7 grand theres lots of good parts on it. and actually it is a good idea, and simple but i dont know if this format of website would support it. many sites like for example ebay, have that type of service. I know for a fact ebay associates didnt sit down and type in every zipcode into a database and hand sort distances, its a program that does all that shit. but anyway I dont think it is really necessary. I am in michigan and have had no problems finding things. anyway at least your thinking, and dont worry about nasty illfounded comments from other buthurt zilvians.

but you are nobody, thats the thing. you aren't a mod, or an admin, so it's probably not going to happen, unless you pay zilvia $1000.00 for the change of the forum. lol

To answer my own question, PhotoPost Classifieds does it (I knew I'd seen it somewhere):

http://www.photopost.com/class/

The only vBulletin plugin I could find (SR Classifieds) doesn't appear to:

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=112504

But there may be others.

(Just throwing that out there for the curious)

What about more sub forums in for sale section like how wheels/tires and cars is? Example, a section like: suspension chassis, cosmetics, turbo/na, part outs/oem, electronics(afc's, guages etc), or even misc. section for people selling non car related stuff like ziptied memberships haha.

a lot of people want to sell lots of different stuff. not necessarily part out, but not one specific thing.

We have talked before about adding more subsections and frankly it would just be a hassle to maintain. As it is now, people can't figure were the hell to post things half the time. With more subforums it would be even more confusing for the idiots who don't take the time to read.

Zipcodes would be pointless.

If everyone can adopt the state abriviation before the topic within the for sale section it would make spotting local sales much easier.

exaple:

CO: Work Meister S2R Wheels blah blah

AZ: Donkey punch from WeST - $100

Yea, but as stated b4 this system really isnt that hard to find people from your area that are selling things, so its kinda like everyone else said u have 6 posts, 4 of which you've replt'd in here bitching how its incovienient for u, thats just life my friend, u have to get over it, and btw there are regional forums, get to know the regional members, and when u see them selling stuff, bada bing. :) Welcome to Zilvia

The last thing I would do is ever install another piece of software from Photopost, I have been with them from the beginning and it’s been nothing but problems. That’s why the gallery is always down, I got away from them for awhile with vBGallery, but they ended up buying them!

Its been attempted by many forums and none have been successful, the classifieds are good in theory but never pan out. We will stick with our current method, if we feel we need to add other sections, we will.

I disagree. The dsmtuners.com photopost classifieds has worked flawlessly since the day it was instituted. Plus it has the great option of "pay now" through paypal so you don't have 15 people calling "dibs" on stuff. If you're against the software totally, then I understand, but it really is useful stuff.

Puttin all this complainin aside, what we need is to get the HoW to section back, so we can see step by step installs of anything thats everything

you can just include your zip in the info and when you search it will come up,

ex: search buttttonnnnnn Ray Rim 92220
