Hi San Diegans!

I need some help identifying what the problem-is with my power steering. It's making noise when I turn the wheel, kinda a mechanical grinding sound. It doesn't do it when I go straight on the freeway, but it really makes noise if I sit still and crank the wheel. I can't decide if it's the power steering pump or if it's the rack. There's a small part of my brain that is hoping a fluid flush will solve the problem.

It is not leaking any fluids, and I don't think the power steering is failing (steering effort feels fine).

I'm looking for some skilled eyes and ears to help me figure out what it is.

Thanks!

Yeah. Fluid levels are fine.

Is the belt chafing anywhere ie rubbing somewhere it shouldn't be?

Naah. Belt is fine. If it was rubbing, it would rub all the time, and the noise only happens when I crank the wheel. I'm pretty sure it's either the pump or the rack.

I'll check that as soon as it cools off. It's like 90-something degrees outside.
