View Full Version : Gauging Interest for FRP Trunk/Hatch for 240sx

REDSH!FT

So I'm looking to gauge interest for FRP trunks.

Here's the lowdown:
-Cheaper than CF by over $100...Can't say how much yet because I don't even know yet...
-Not for looks...For weight reduction
-Would be very similar to CF Trunk designs you've seen, but in FRP instead.
-Would utilize the stock hinging and latching systems...Center garnish will bolt in, just like stock (in the cases of S13 hatch and S14)

Who would be interested in these? They would be a great way to drop probably 15 lbs or more (I'd assume) off of the rear of the car, even more if you have a hatch.

I would like to see 15-20 people interested in these...Obviously I need to see a good reason to produce these.

I would Be interested. My trunk is dynamatted and have wanted to get rid of it for some time. Just didn't want to slang that CF money for something I would prolly paint.

I am in. Put me down as #1 on the list.

These are things I would like to see:

1. Can you offer them with Lexan installed in the hatch, ready for bolting into the car? I've been looking all over for a shop who can do Lexan.

2. Can you offer them with no hole for the rear windshield wiper? I saw these on the Seibon and it's useless for those without the wiper.

3. Can you offer them with no cutout for the center garnish like you said above? It would improve the structural integrity of the hatch.

1. The Lexan could be OFFERED, but not included as many people would probably not want to put it in. (lots of street driven cars would want glass as Lexan scratches up SOO easily)

2. Yeah, F a rear wiper...who needs that? We could probably make it so you CAN put one in w/ some cutting, but not actually a pre-cut hole

3. The center garnish "delete" would probably NOT be something we would do as many people would probably want to keep that. Especially since it is where the reverse lights are housed, and plus, the rigidity of the hatch isn't really that important IMO, and I think it would at most, be adversely effected if it was removed.

PS. please include what kind of trunk you have when posting your reactions/ideas

Any Hope For Frp Hoods?

REDSH!FT
07-07-2006, 03:52 PM
Yes, definitely hope for FRP, OEM style hoods :)

Want a vent? Want a hole? Cut it yourself

My goals behind these parts are as follows:
-low weight
-low cost
-minimal "pre modification"...Meaning, if you want a wiper hole...cut it yourself, it's easier to cut a hole than it is to fill it...Same goes for any sort of venting or spoiler you might want to install...

Comments for the S13 fastback.

That would be great. FRP is so easy to cut and drill that you can do whatever you want.

On the hatch, the center garnish only houses the high mount brake light. You can easily go with a low-profile light and mount it higher up on the glass.

REDSH!FT
07-07-2006, 06:29 PM
Oh, I thought you meant the center section of the taillight...which is also mounted on the trunk IIRC...

The 3rd brakelight would probably be removed because it looks 100x better...if you need one so bad, you can wire up a universal one that goes in the back glass instead...like in 1000000 other cars out there

I would definatly be interested in an fpr oem style hood, the price tag for a new carbon fiber hood is retarded, especially since I'd paint it anyway. I might be interested in a hatch as well. would be nice, and I could sell my 2 wingless wiperless hatches, lol.

A OEM FPR S14 hood would be sweet, you could put me down for one of them.

I'd be interested in an FPR S13 hatch.

No 3rd brake light hole, and no rear windshield wiper hole.

g6civcx
07-07-2006, 10:22 PM
On the hatch, you can see the reverse lights here. It's in the trim panel, and not on the hatch. It's no big deal really since you can probably relocate the reverse lights to the bumper if you really wanted to.

If you can plug up all the holes in the factory hatch in the FRP hatch, that would be really great. Cheaper than carbon fibre and more user friendly as well.

BTW, I saw a blue S14 that looks exactly like yours in front of me before I came to the shop. I thought it was yours. "Ian has his car running? No way!"

I might be interested in an s13 coupe or s14 trunk lid. All depends if I stay in Japan or not.

g6civcx
07-08-2006, 07:15 AM
I would gladly pay the $100 extra if it means I can get a carbon fibre hatch with no holes in it. All the ones I saw have holes for the wiper.

trsilvias13
07-10-2006, 12:26 PM
if you delete the center garnish, it would limit it to sales to kouki or chuki tail light owner unless you want to make two molds.

the kouki and chuki/zenki center is different.

RPS1392

I'd be interested in an FPR S13 hatch.

No 3rd brake light hole, and no rear windshield wiper hole.

Same here...both a FRP Hood and Hatch.

S14DB
07-10-2006, 01:52 PM
The center contains the key hole. I dunno how you would get around that. I assume he could make another part to replace the garnish in FRP or CF. but putting it on the hatch looks pretty stupid to me.

I can't believe I'm reading these replies. Has anyone ever seen a 240SX before?

The center tail panel has nothing to do with the hatch. Unless you guys are talking about making a replacement piece for that, the mold of the hatch would not change, no matter what tails you have fitted. All 89-93s would use the exact same piece. The only options would be 3rd brakelight and wiper holes. Some of these replies are making the assumption that you have to use a different hatch to fit different tails, which is ignorant as hell.

Ricks15
07-11-2006, 12:17 AM
I mean if the price would be decent then I thin I would probably get one. "Wonder" of japan makes some really sweet FRP hatches but Id bet they cost way too much so I hope you guys can make one out for a decent price.

REDSH!FT
07-12-2006, 09:25 AM
Wow yeah I don't know what I was thinking...It's hot out and I didn't want to go look at the 5 million S13's we have outside...I'm tired of looking at these things...You know how it goes.

So here are some cliff notes from what I've gathered...

-Trunks/Hatches for all cars are wanted
-Key hole=gone
-Wiper hole=gone
-For S14, the center garnish slot stays correct?
-3rd brake light=gone for all parties
-FRP hoods also wanted in OEM style

Keep em coming guys. The more responses the better! I will start talking to my manufacturer about prototyping...

Hey from reading the post above, it sounds wants to make a hatch that for s13 that woudl delete the center garanish. If that was the case the center garnish for s13 hatch kouki and earlier models are different. I know that s14 are exactly the same as people take kouki lights and put them on the zenki. I however did forget that a delete cannot be made because of the key hole.

I'm down for a cheap S14 trunk with NO third brake light.

-For S14, the center garnish slot stays correct?

^^^I don't get what you're talking about. There is no garnish on the S14 trunks.

REDSH!FT
07-12-2006, 01:55 PM
Sure there is...The middle of the tail lights...that bolts on to the trunk lid...So instead of making a 1 piece trunk, that will no longer utilize the OEM "center tail light" it will just be made like stock, minus the 3rd brake light of course.

:faint: Doh! I forgot for a second but yeah everything stock minus 3rd brake light.

Since I deleted the third brake light already and painted the trunk 3 times I've had that thing off like a million times.

You are correct that the kouki 180SX has a different center garnish that houses the reverse lights. That's why when you order the round taillights you have to get the new center garnish as well.

But on the fastback it's not part of the hatch itself. Go lift up the hatch and you'll see, or look at the picture I posted above.

We don't want the holes because they leak and make your car rust. If you really want holes that badly, fibreglass is really easy to cut.

I've been bitching for as long as I've owned the car that every lightweight body piece is just carbon-covered FRP or heavy-ass epoxied-to-hell show carbon.

What I want is a trunklid with no mounting points for any of the stock bits. I'm going to four-pin it anyway so they're not necessary. Minimal bracing should be used, only enough to remove most flex.

I'm still working on stuff right now, but I agree with the idea of no stock mounting points BUT!

If you want it that way, you'll still have to utilize the pads where the bolts go in to so it makes little difference, I THINK.

So...the way they will be set up is to not use the stock cross bars that spring the trunk up and hold it. But they will use the stock hinges and latch. You can cut off what you don't want.

What about the glass area? Does the $325 + shipping price include lexan or some sort of material to cover the rear hatch glass area?

Or would that be the buyer's responsibility?

And also, will you sell a version with lexan or whatever already installed in that space for a little more dough for a quick R&R effort?

SaintlyCharBoy you live in NH!!!

I have a shop in NH a little south.

If Ian can ship two trunks to a buisness address for a good price we can just split shipping.

I am 99% in for a S13 coupe trunk.

with holes for hood pins pre-drilled

I can definitely tell you ahead of time that this may be a problem. You don't really know how the holes for the pins will line up until you get the hood on and adjusted. Plus different people will want to put the pins in different locations. But FRP is really really easy to drill and cut. It should be no problem for you to do final fitting and cutting.

Just giving you a head up.

Thanks to everybody who posted. Please keep it going to we can get the vendor jumpstarted.

If you're not sure you want it, just put your name on the list. This is for interest only. You're not signing up to buy because we don't even know how much it will cost. Don't be afraid to put your name up. I may not even buy depending upon the final product.

So just put it up and we'll keep it moving. :naughty:

To help us organize, please copy and paste this whole list and put your name in it. This is just for interest only, and not a commitment to buy. Please also put what options you want and where you want it shipped to. If your category is not listed, add one for yourself.

Please respond so we can get this going.
