Just got a new 1990 240sx with 100k miles (5spd). I'm waiting on enough cash for the SR swap, but in the mean time I'm looking for smaller things to do. So far:

PCV Valve removal (the previous owner kindly supplied me with a Chilton's manual and I'm led to believe that removing this would slightly increase performance) [tell me if this is a bad idea (i'd obviously put it back when i got it inspected)]

Iridium spark plugs (suggested by a friend-in-the-know)

Remove clutch fan (same friend says this makes a huge difference and the main fan can be rigged to run all the time which means roughly no net difference in average running engine temp)

New cold thermostat

Advance/retard timing with a timing light

And one final question:

Is there some way I can (temporarily, without destroying anything) not do EGR? I imagine it steals a bit of power.

Thanks guys.

Please do not do ANY of those things on your list.  they will do VERY little if anything at all for your car..

Please..  put the PCV valve Back.

Use Copper plugs...

removing the clutch fan frees up MINIMAL hp.  not worth it for the risk of overheating using nothing but your A/C fan.

There is no need for a colder thermostat unless you have a LOT of heat causing mods..  i.e. BIG turbo...

Only Advance timing if you are ok with running premium gas all the time. &nbsp;this will gain you like .5 hp.. &nbsp; <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

There is no reason to remove the EGR either.. &nbsp;None.. &nbsp;until you go modifying the exhaust manifold or something.. &nbsp;read.. "Turbo"...

What I "DO" resommend..

Do a basic Tune-up. &nbsp;period. &nbsp;Cheap and effective. &nbsp; We just had a thread about this about a day ago.. &nbsp;check it out. &nbsp; If you can't find it just holler.
