View Full Version : Hardest thing I've ever had to do...Put my dog down.

I'm a fucking wreck. I thought I would take this better then I have. I'm actually a pretty strong person.

Last week my dog started having seizurs. Every 20 seconds or so he would start seizuring. So my fiance took him into the vet and they drugged him up to stop the seizures.

They let her take him home that night and gave us some medication and ran mad tests on him to see what was wrong. A lot of dogs have epalepsy(sp) which is treatable so we were really hoping it was that. Nicole (my fiance) started doing some research online and found out that alot of Yorkies have a problem with Liver shunt's. It's were there is a vein that bypasses the liver which means that toxins are not taken out of the blood stream and they continue to circulate. Well this is not good and humans as well as dogs get this and can die unless expensive surgery is done. We could not afford the thousands of dollars worth of surgery to have it possibly corrected. We opted to try and treat him with medication per the Vet's advice. Our other option was to put him down. She said that he may get used to the meds after a week or so and the seizuers should go away and he could live another few years. So we gave the meds a shot...Unfortunatly he continued to seizure often and his health deteriated quickly. He could no longer walk with our falling over and he slept about 99% of the time.

It's been a ruff 5 days on us. We've been staying up with him wondering if he was going to make it through the night or not. He was hanging on as much as he could. I think he just wanted to stay with us as long as possible. This dog has been like a child to us. Everyone in our family called him by how they would have been related to him like he was our kid. Grandson, nephew, son...

We decided becuase his health was not improving that we would take him in today and put him to sleep.

Honestly it was the most emotional I have ever been in my entire life. I did not realize how much he meant to us and how difficult it would be.

We love our little guy and hope that he is really comfy and in a happy place.

RIP the coolest dog ever, Turbo....

Dude, you and your family have my deepest sympathies. I know from firsthand experience what an awful ordeal it can be when this decision needs to be made. It helps to know that if Turbo was able to let you know, right now he'd be saying thank you for all the memories and for doing the right thing. Again, you have my deepest sympathies.

Wow man, I don't think I'll be able to handle that with my dog. It's the worst thing to lose a friend. I really feel for you, I'm sorry :(

Sorry to hear the news bro, he's looking down panting and smiling at you guys. =)

Atleast you had the decesion of letting him go to sleep instead of him being hit by a car, or a truck, or a bike....

Yeah, I lost numerous pets to vehicles. =(

sorry to hear that dude. its a vey tough thing to do. i've had to put 3 pets down over the years due to medical issues. 2 just last year and the other one the vet had to come to our house and they did it on our kitchen floor, cause the vet was closed. that one was rough.:(

I'm a dog lover. Whoever says that dogs are just dogs...go to hell.

I'm sorry for your lost. Dogs rule.

I just like everyone to know this...everyone knows that humans outlive dogs...but here's to them.

Your dog may just be a part of your life...but to your dog, you ARE his/her life.

Your dog can never outlive you (In all normal circumstances).

I have a lot of dogs in the Philippines I miss them all.

i know what your going thru. i had to put my dog down about 2 months ago now. he had displacia and couldn't walk very well. Like you, it was probably the hardest thing i ever had to do. I had him since i was 5 years old. just hang in there and you'll get over it, but everytime i walk past his grave i always stop and say something nice.

Dude, I know how it is, I had one of my dogs get hit by a car when she got off her lead last year, then had to have the other put down for heartworms, unexpectedly, 3 weeks later.
Trust, I know how it is to go through some shit like this.

Bro, I'm going through the same shit now.

Had this dog for roughly 12years..now it just won't move.
It sat at one spot for 4 hrs..till I lifted her up.

Sucks man. Specially since we had her for so long.

Samething had happened to me, but with my cat.

I picked up this stray cat because it had pretty much NO fat or meat on its body, so my family brought it home, fed him well until he was strong enough to run around outside. Unfortunately 2 weeks later, I came home to see my cat lying across the floor struggling to breathe. We took it to the Vet, and apparently the cat had been over 20 years old, and his heart was failing.
Needless to say, we had to put him down.

Anyway, sorry to hear about your loss man.

My sympathies go out man. I had the something similair happen to my German Shepard. She got off her leash one evening and got hit by a car. We spent thousands in a matter of hours to save her and nothing they did could fix her. Doc came out and said she will never walk so my dad did the obvious. It was one of the hardest things to go through man.

Same as P4rD0nM3 said, to your pet, you are their life. Just remember the good times. *a

I'm sorry for your loss bro. My best friend just put down his black lab. We found it on the streets when we were 8 years old, running wild. We caught her and brought her to his house. She lived for a long, long time. Was our best friend growing up, that dog went everywhere with us.

Its very sad to see them go, but its reassuring knowing they were pampered and loved there time on this earth.

man dude =/

ive been there, your dog looks so young :(

my childhood dog had to be put to sleep when he was 14, and i was the only one with the courage to take him, it was one of the worst things i ever did

but he needed it to be done, if he couldve, he probably would have tried to walk off and do it himself, he was just a shell at that point

know that your dog will always love you very much, alive or gone. and i honestly recommend a new dog within a month or two, but a totally different breed so you will have something to love again but not remind you of something you cannot replace

Man, sorry to hear about your loss.
My brother's girlfriend has one and tells me that the breed of dog is prone to various health problems when they start getting old which is around 7 to 8 years.

I'm kinda teary eyed sitting here reading how much you loved your dog.

Reminds me when we put my cat to sleep, that I GREW UP with. 16 years old. I couldn't even watch them administer the shot. I used to trip and think that I saw the cat months after he died. But it would just be a crumpled up black back pack or purse (The cat was black.)

I know what you're going through. It's hard, but you'll get over it, it just takes time. Don't get another dog until you're really ready, getting another doesn't fill that gap for a while, and may not ever..

Yea we've done research that shows that 1 in 7 Yorkies will be effected with a liver problem.

Infact a lady one cubicle over had the same problem but it was with a puppy that they only have for a week and they had to put it down.

And Thanks 240Falkon. I  everytime I read what I wrote too.

Everyone that ever met Turbo thought he was the coolest dog. He had a crazy personality and made us laugh non stop.

When he was a puppy he would actually take his toys and stand by it so that one of his back legs would be by it while facing away from it. He would then make a motion like he was trying to get away from the toy but it had a hold of his leg and he couldn't. Then all of a sudden he would turn around and attack it like he was fighting back. God dang that was funny. I mean it was like he was seriously acting and using his imagination! :ugh: :) People always used to say, "Get that on tape and send it into AFV!". But we never did. He stopped doing that though a couple years ago.

Yeah, people that dont have dogs will never know. When you spend the first couple of days with your new dog, youre attached...period...unless you are just a cold person. I dont know what I would do if I had to do what you did man.
