Hey guys,

I've done brakes on my car and other people's cars many times, so I have a good feeling with what I'm doing.

I've run into a problem that I need some quick help on. I'm doing my family's 96 Maxima, and the brake hardware is extremely similar to the 240SX. Knowing how decetnly technical minded this community is, I've decided to post here in the general forum.

I did the fronts with no problem. The rears are a different story.

After removing the two pin bolts on a caliper, the caliper should literally slide right off the back of the brake pads surfaces. Unforunately, it did not happen for me. For some reason, the caliper is stuck, and is compressing too much on the brake pads. There is some play, but I can only get the caliper off about 40%. Any farther away from the center of the rotor, and it actually gets harder to move any distance at all.

The hand-brake is down, I've tries starting the car and then pumping the brake a few times w/o putting the hand-brake up again, with no luck.

The rotor rotates freely when the caliper is in its mounted position, but when I have the caliper 40% removed from the pad surfaces, the rotor is totally locked (like the brake is being depressed).

Why do you guys think this is happening? I'd appeciate any help I can get. Thanks.

edit:In regards to the post below mine, I also did try to take off the whole caliper assembly by removing the two large caliper mounting bolts. Unfortunately, I ran into the problem stated above, where the pads are "clamping" too tightly onto the rotor.

What about trying to take the caliper off with the bracket?

I figured out the problem after lots of thinking, and trial and error.

There is a bolt that holds the hand-brake cable onto the suspension system of the rear axle. All I had to do was unto that bolt so there was enough play in the line to pull the caliper off and around the rotor.

Lesson learned: If something is stuck, look to see if anything else can be unbolted to free it up. And keep a cool head.....

Glad you searched, but there's absolutely no need for you to bump a 4 year old thread.
