Well i had the car finally running great, everything was working perfect, and then i took the car for a couple of runs. As i pulled in after the runs i felt a little vibration in the rear. I backed the car up slowly and felt it again, i then creeped forward slowly and felt it again i slowed to a stop. I lifted the car and turned the tires backwards and it just vibrates. I can even hold the drive shaft still and turn the tires. Im pretty sure this means my lsd is trashed, right? And also if any one has any suggestions as to whether i should rebuild mine, buy an after market new one, or a used one (j30, q45 ...)? Thanks for any help, ill be crying watching the note book until i get my baby back on the road!:wtc:

What kind of LSD is it? i.e. viscous, clutch type, helical, torsion, open blah blah

Well it was in the car when i bought it but i was told it was a jdm s13 unit. It was locking before and both tires spun in the same direction when i turned them so its not an open diff. Thats all i know.

probably a VLSD... have you checked all the bolts? (i.e. driveshaft, halfshafts)

I disconnected the drive shaft and spun the tires to make sure it was the diff and not tranny or drive shaft related, so im pretty sure its inside the diff. When i drained the fluid and put my finger in thedrain hole to feel around it had alot of black deposits at the bottom , which i thought might be clutch material but now im not sure. Thanks for responding

VLSD's don't have any clutch plates..
And if you disconnected the driveshaft, thats why you can spin the tires while holding the driveshaft.. your descriptions are way too vague

Sorry about that, i meant i can spin the tires while holding the drive shaft when its connected. And when i disconnect the drive shaft i spin the tires i can still feel the vibration. I try to write as little as possibe so people dont see a huge post and just ignore because they dont want to read too much, but thanks for responding!

Do this test: put tranny in gear or hold drive shaft, hold one wheel and try to spin the other one

Another thought is since you've already drained the diff just take the cover off and see if you can see anything that might be obviously broken or loose.
