View Full Version : HID retrofit - headlight housing progress *pics*

Well this has been a long ass project. I've long since taken out the popups and put in the fixed position E46 Bi-xenon HID units. I just didn't like the janky-ness of the current setup, so I'm trying the fiberglass route.

So far, I've got the mold done. Next step is to start putting the fiberglass into the mold to create the piece that will actually go on the car.

Anyways, just thought I'd share.

Here's what I have now. It's the passenger side, but you get the idea.

Bask in it's janky-ness....

I like it, keep updating the progress.

Even though bi-xenon units utilize the same housing for the high beam and low beam, if you plan on flashing somebody, the bi-xenon lights will not be fast enough to react to that, so it's a good idea to have a seperate halogen high beam for that function.

And yes, being able to flash someone is important, especially to wake that asshole that's crossed into your lane up, late at night.

Actually, it's all the same bulb, so there's no lag time in firing up another bulb. The only thing that happens when brights come on is a flap goes down, allowing more light out. So...flashing works JUST fine :)

Here's some shots of the whole front:

Are you going to redo the housings and eliminate the pop-ups? 'cuz I think it might look better.

Are you going to redo the housings and eliminate the pop-ups? 'cuz I think it might look better.

The only part of the pop-ups that are still there are the covers, which you can see have a hole in them. The projectors are fixed-position...no flipping up involved.

The housings I'm making will completely eliminate the stock pop-up pieces.

I didn't say that it takes time to fire up another HID bulb, but it does take time to move that flap.

I don't know how long it takes to move the flap exactly, as I do not have a bixenon setup, and you do, so you'd be able to tell me exactly.

But, there's a reason why BMW has the bixenon hi/low beam, and a seperate halogen high beam for flashing people.

I like the idea, but the headlight looks too simple.. there isn't enough of a front going on...

But I'll hold my opinion until I see the final product. Keep up that custom work... that's where its at.

It's nearly instantaneous :) I'll get a vid when the highs are working properly...I need to replace the diode. *EDIT: after review, it's the capacitor, not the diode.* Will take more time, but I'll get a vid when I get it all running.

And for those commenting on the simplicity, I agree...for now. I'll be putting on some kind of metal bezel that will give it a little spice :D

You need to chill with the double posts. If you have to add something, edit the post. Don't post again right after it.

Keep you flaming to yourself. It's one thing to respectfully disagree and post why. It's totally childish to post smiles and flames.

EH9 - I think a lot of the reason S13'rs don't sport those kits like you pictured is largely due to availability. There's just not that many good looking housings that you can drop in. The Silvia conversion is just easier.

To those commenting on beam pattern: It's actually pretty damned good. Had I not cut out that portion of the bumper it would be a lot worse...I lost a good 3/4"-1" of light (where it would hit the backside of the bumper) before I took that out. Cutoff is crisp, and it lights up everything in front of me :)

i dont like it. ONLY because it is pushed in like that, and there is no cover over the projectors. yet, this shows promise, and it IS homemade. would like to see the finished product. if the headlightcovers themselves were molded in, it would look better. but if they also pop up, that would look cool to, as i believe you are doing? i will be looking into this further and seeing your progress. hopefully you finish this little project.

The beam pattern covers everything I see out of the windshield, so it works for me. The main part of the beam as it crosses the bumper is really only about 4" wide, so I'm not losing much.

Well the projectors, ballasts, bulbs, and ignitors were $300 at www.hidplanet.com from a private party. They have some available through the site as well.

Fiberglass stuff....I dunno, got it at Knecht's this last summer...I'd guess like $75?

And LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of time...if that's worth anything to ya.

Personally, the Silvia front end would be easier, I think. You can take out one of the sets of projectors in those and put in HIDs whenever you want (though you will need a new wiring harness for the HIDs). I've just got so much time and thought invested in these housings it's kinda ridiculous. I've also got a couple holes in my bumper! haha

But the light output is totally worth it...
