View Full Version : How did you resolve "the squat"?

On launches, the car feels sloppy. I have installed the subframe bushings (PITA) and it help eliminate wheel hop, but didn't resolve the squat on accelaration. I plan on crawling under the car and tightening the tranny down, but the rocking reminds me of the old Z31 turbos when they would shift from gear to gear. This weekend I am replacing the anemic Tokiko blues with KYB AGXs, so I hope that will help some. Any ideas?

better mounts, better damping and spring rates

you could try the fancy spl tilt subframe bushing spacers. $53 bucks.
or the obvious... stiffer spring rates and shocks to match them.

Already running Espiler springs, replaced motor and tranny mounts, Specialty-Z subframe bushings from Greg Dupree and planning on replacing with KYB AGX. I have to figure that I will probably have to give up some ride comfort as I stiffen up the tranny. I figure that is where the sloppiness is coming from.

so you're still on OE shocks? Well there's your problem right there.

what the hell is the spring rate on espiler springs? if you're using them with kyb's they can't be that stiff... you can go much stiffer.
and i said tilt subframe bushing spacers. not aluminum subframe bushing collars. not subframe bushings. these spacers do something else.
straight from splparts.com:
"Subframe bushing spacers are used to tune anti-squat by rotating the instant center of the rear suspension through rotating the subframe or moving the subframe relative to the center of gravity:"
dunno if they work. definitely worth a try for $50 bucks.
i noticed you haven't said anything about differential bushings. i don't know if it would increase or decrease squat, but replacing them will take alot of slop out of your drivetrain.

Squatting is good for maximizing weight transfer on the rear wheels to increase traction coming off the line for drag racing, at least that's what I've always thought as common sense.
Go watch that video of the Mazworx S14's 9.97 run and see how hard that thing squats.
If you're into drag racing, squat is good man.

Squat is OK as long as you are not bottoming out. If you are bottoming out then you could cause bounce and then be slower off the line.
I'm assuming you are using good sticky tires?
Also, you'll never eliminate it complely, but a good suspension setup is where you need to turn your attention. Get good spring rates and look into what settings are best. I'm no drag expert, but you want a softer in the rear and stiffer in the front, I believe.
Also, don't forget that wheelie bars are installed for a reason...

i think hks drag coilover will help you in drag racing. They are design for it and help 0-60 with the slow rebound.

yes those hks drag coilovers are badass for drag. just go look at the video

it has been said; the answer to the question initially presented is "stiffer springs/coilovers, all this other bullshit can end now.

SPL FTW.
solid bushing types = squat tuning.
It didn't make sense when i initially read about it a few years back, theni put 2 and 2 together, and it clicked.

Fuck that shit, Exvitermini ran a mid-8 on stock suspension :fawk:

For starters, I have installed the subframe spacers from Greg Dupree at Specialty-Z that I've used on my Z32 as well. I think some of the "sloppiness" in feel during street driving is the subframe walking as well as the transmission flopping.

stiffer rear susp is not the answer, unless you were talking about just sloppy launches from a stop with normal driving. you want the rear to squat, and nothing is better for that than OE suspension. but not blown out OE struts either. the 2nd part of that equation is that if youre going to the track and want to achieve something besides a high 60 foot time and a big MPH #, get some real tires...DRs or slicks. anything else is a waste.
i never tested my subframe collars vs none but i know that on my OE suspension and some drag radials, I hooked way better than i do with my megan coilvoers now. even raising them in the rear and going full soft.
the hks drag coilovers are pretty good i hear but im not about to waste almost 2K on them when i can jsut swap out for my OE rear susp in about 20 min.

When I really get down to it, the squat probably doesn't bother me as much as the sloppiness during regular driving/shifting. The tranny-driveline-subframe just seem mushy.
I probably will stick with the Espelir GT-Spec Blue springs and install some new KYB AGX adjustable dampers. My Z32 and Z33 are stick enough to knock out my fillings. No need to add another car to that dental bill. ;)

get new differential bushings, like i said earlier.
options:
OEM
nismo hard rubber
spl aluminum
