Been here since early '99. I keep missing out on deployments, and now as an Instructor I have at least 3 more years until I'll see any overseas time. Good because it keeps me near my family. (Wife and 2 daughters, soon to be 3 daughters) Bad because I feel I'm missing out on a big part of serving my country. At least I know I'm training the future of the Marine Corps. I spent the last 2.5 years of my career getting these aircraft approved for full production, now I'm training the people who will usher them into battle in the years to come.

My aircraft is the MV-22B. It's a Bell-Boeing collaboration and it kicks ass. Combines the capablities of a Helicopter (Vertical/Short Take off, heavy lifting, hovering, land it alomost anywhere) with the speed and range of a Turbo-prop Airplane (270+ mph, and long range). Feel free to read more here-- http://www.tiltrotormech.com/tiltrotor_information.htm

I dunno if you call it the same thing but in the Navy it's called an Osprey. The USS San Antonio is the first ship designed to support it. Cool aircraft. The ship they're gonna be on looks nice as hell too. Especially for the Marines because they get more space for their gear. The thing I have says the V-22 can go 316mph maximum. Dunno though, never seen one in person.
ThatGuy
04-01-2006, 05:55 PM
Yes we call it an Osprey as well. As far as a ship goes, they fit pretty well on this one. Could definitely use some more room though.

A common misconception thanks to the media. We have only lost 4 aircraft. Unfortunately we lost some good people with a couple of those aircraft. But the numbers are nowhere near 50, and the Osprey isn't the troop killer that the media made us out to be. The media can't seem to report anything good about us without also mentioning, "This is the same Osprey that has killed 24 Marines since 2000." What they never mention is that we fly day in, day out, with no problems what-so-ever. I don't think we are doing too badly for a fairly new aircraft. To give an example, when the Marine Corps first started testing the AV-8B Harriers, they lost 19 aircraft in 19 MONTHS. The Osprey program has been dealing with funding issues, but has been in development since the 1980's. Four lost aircraft in 25 years is not a "troop killer" in my book. All the accidents have been since 1999 when the Marine Corps really started testing them. Honestly, if you can find an aircraft program with a better crash record, then I'd like to see it. Maybe NASA, since they only lost the Challenger and the Columbia, but then again they fly ALOT less then we do.
It's great that everyone has such an interest. Thanks guys.

"
Really is an amazing looking aircraft. I start my private pilot classes later this year. :2f2f:
On April 8 2000 aircraft 04 crashed at a small airfield in Marana, AZ. 19 Marines lost their lives that day. The crash was determined to be the result of the aircraft entering a vortex ring state." VRS occurs when a rotary-wing aircraft inadvertently descends into its own vortexes or downwash. Any Rotorcraft can enter into this state and many have lost their lives from this.
"The program faced another setback in December of 2000 when aircraft 08 crashed in Jacksonville, NC killing 4 Marines. The cause of the crash was later determined to be the result of a simultaneous failure of hydraulics and software. The program was again grounded and a rigorous redesign was begun by Bell/Boeing. For the first time the engineers looked to the experience of the Marine maintainers for redesign considerations. The changes will be carried out in three phases. Block A, Block B and Block C.
In 2002 the V-22 program began an almost complete rebuild of two aircraft located at NAS Patuxent River. Led by a small group of the most experienced Marine maintainers the V-22 Integrated Test Team (ITT) successfully modified the aircraft and were vital to the successful return to flight on May 29, 2002."
The Osprey came about in the early 80's and got caught up in the post cold war anti-proliferation of the 90's. Anything that was thought to be specialty or single use was killed. A-10 came under heavy attack also. Most of the anti-Osprey data comes from when Dick Cheney was George H. W. Bush's defense secretary. He tried to kill it multiple times. being over turned every time by congress.
Another thing is how they developed the V-22. Normally a company designs an aircraft then sells it. Incorporating the R&D into the cost per unit. The Osprey is being developed with the military. So that the cost of the initial craft are much higher than the deployable craft will be. Analysts make the simplistic comparison of an off the shelf rotorcraft with the Osprey. Apples and Oranges IMHO. I love how no one talks about the Billions that have been spent on the F-22 Raptor program.
Since 2k1 there has been a demand in Afghanistan for the osprey in operations. I think the V-22 can replace a few specialty rotorcraft in the inventory.
Sorry for the rant. I love the craft and think it will change aviation majorly once it goes into general production with the Bell 609.

ThatGuy
04-02-2006, 02:08 PM
The crew doesn't typically equip themselves with parachutes. As is the case with most Helicopters. Usually a helo can slow it's decent to allow for survivability of most crashes. Unfortunately that wasn't the case for these incidents. That is not to say that every impact will be fatal in an Osprey. Just that the 4 crashes we have experienced didn't leave any room for survival. May they rest in peace.

Can they auto rotate like a helicopter if the power is lost?
No, it cannot auto-rotate. However if one engine fails, the remaining engine is capable of turning both rotorheads to allow for a controlled decent and landing.
BEISSEN
04-02-2006, 03:01 PM
Also Auto Rotate does not always stop you from crashing its ment to help slow your decent down and gain a little better control so you have a better chance to Survive.

When i used to fly rc helicopters, i would fly them till they ran out of gas, then autorotate them for landing.

Its funny that you brought the Osprey up. Im in the air force out in Travis, one of my boy whos a maintaner for the KC-10 just got shipped to NM to be part of the first operational squadron for those things. Just sucked that they had a lottery for one name from hydraulics from both the KC-10 and the C-5 side, and his name pops. 3 wks later he's PCSing to NM. Cool plane, better than a Helo for its speed and range. I have just not been a big fan of VTOL, ever since ive seen a harrier take off and land, it just look so damn awkward.
Speaking of C-5s...yall seen that shiet in DOVER??? Surprised nobody died, the freakin fuselage snapped in HALF and the horizontal stabilizer was gone.
Also ADVAN, wut job did you say your trying to get? If your trying for somekind of Aircraft maintenance, Im not sure wussup with those careerfield rite now since theyre cutting them all across the board. And thats all Aircrafts, from fighters to heavies. My roomates getting force out rite now cuz theres no job for him.

I have actually had my eye on an Auto Gyro, this company in NZ makes them. They auto rotate safer than a helo. Its a pusher prop that just feathers the main rotor blades. It can land and stop a distance equal to its length! Thats short!
My plan is to buy a warehouse out here by my local airfield (Gillespie) in a couple years so i can have the play room to work on it and store it.
