I just picked up an s13 hatch its a complete running sohc clean title and I got it for free. :rawk:
Now to the bad :) It was sitting at a body shop for 2 years and they stripped the interior and the window mold, pulled the fenders, bumpers and doors off and did all the body work so the car is straight with just a little finishing on the left rear quarter panel left to be done. It was also put on the frame jig and made sure it was perfectly straight. So its a good clean car with a newly rebuily motor just needs some finishing sanding and then paint. I have the resources to spray it myself so I want to, for one it will give me some practice to get ready for the s14 and it will be cheaper and probably better than a $500 macco paintjob. Now my real questions anyone know of any good write up on tools and procedures for painting, I have very little experience on it but I am sure I can do it and this is basically a blank canvas so if I mess up I can start over I have no time constraint on it. I was thinking about going to borders and looking for a book I want to pick up a decent gun for reasonably priced and some other essential tools like block sanding block and some stuff to wetsand the car between base and clear and then after and a nice high speed buffer to finish it. Looking for a good place to buy paint and tools and how much harder it is to spray a metallic than a non flake paint. I wanted to do a pearl white probably or a blue with some metalic in it. Here are some pics of the car as it sits now I havent had a chance to sort through the interior pieces they are all thrown in the car wanted to get the paint done and then window mold and trim back on then work on the interior.

Its probably about a weeks worth of work but will probably take me 6mo :) I am in no rush I will probably sell it when I get it finished just a project for now, good paint experience and then make a little money to put back into my car.

I have a great body shop supply right around the corner from my house called Macs distributing, they have everything. I got my new gun for like $160 and damn it makes a difference. Gravity feed HVLP...I am like a pro painter now...LOL. I suggest buying the gun for your clear coat instead of buying three different needles. IE. primer 2.0, base 1.6, clear 1.4. Talk to the guys behind the counter they will tell you what is best. Each needle set is like $100, so you might as weel buy a whole gun. I got the one 1.5 and was very happy.
Good luck man... take a bunch of pics.

Cool thanks I will look into it what brand is your gun? I was thinking about using the same gun for base and top and maybe a different gun for primer. Let me know.

My spray gun is made by Advantage. The guy that sold it to me said he has been selling them for years without problems. It looks cool too.

man eh.... that gun looks compared to the harbor freight... no joke and im not being an asshole... i got a devilbis and a few sata's i have no use for them anymore... from time to time i use them to redo my furniture and a few side jobs here and there.... never use the same gun u just shot primer with.. u will shoot crap out when ur paintin... each gun should be for certain jobs .. like one for metallics, one for solid, one for clear maybe... or what ever...... my devilbis cost me roughly 400 bucks... and i got every tip they offered with that gun... as a package deal when it first came out...

gravity fed guns are cool... but u gotta use the cup liners... the ones that 3m sells ... so u can paint up side down, and horizontal... plus waste of material is cut to a minimum....

strip that whole chassis down and throw away everything.... except for the necessitys... get new a new dash and door panels and seats.. ... get it drivable.... thats how i would start...

^OUCH!... Yea, I would of liked a Brinks or Devilbis, but I do not paint all that often, maybe if I was going to paint all the time I would bought one of those. I know pro-painters have at least 3 guns for different product, but you have to admit cleaning is key. I had a pro-painter friend that taught me it should take almost twice as long to clean your gun as it did to shoot.

HAHA your car came with the same stupid wheels mine did! ;) Looks like a nice car in the making.

I am quite fond of this site:

Several pro-painters hang out there and have posted many guides to help the DIY'er with their own projects.

thanks for all the replies. I am going to probably pick up a gun for primer and a gun for base. and then either use the primer gun for clear or the base gun for clear? Not sure what is better since I will probably shoot a mettalic base. Either way paint is a little way's off anyway, my s14 interior is going into this car and the dash back in and it will be driveable picking up new doors and rear bumper today for free :) and need to find a front and bumper supports and maybe the crash bar. but I want it to be drivable for now and then I can move it much easier and work on it in my spare time. after I cleaned out the interior its actually not too bad.
