View Full Version : Question for you cali guys?? (cali laws)
Hey, im moving out to the huntington beach/ socal area in june and had some questions about the "strict car laws". I grew up in sandiego but moved to the eastcoast about 9 years ago, im now 19 so i have know idea about the current laws. I have a sr swapped 89 coupe thats pretty low, with no emission things and have a 3in apexi exhaust with a test pipe, which isnt legal in pa either but i have connections out here for inspection. I was wondering how bad they are coming down on people, i noticed there are alot of heavily modding cars on here from cali so i was wondering what you guys were doing?? I also have a mkiv jetta that i will be returning mostly to stock so i will have a daily driver, but i dont know how many cars my apt complex will let me have. So basicly my question is do you guys think it is a good idea to bring my coupe out to socal or sell it?? which i really dont want to do.
thanks dan

Oh man, you are moving to the absolute WORST area for import/modified vehicles EVER. Cops everywhere, and they all know what SRs are and what to check for as far as emissions equipment. Well, City of Industry is close, but in all seriousness you might be better off selling your car before you move out to Huntington Beach. OR, move somewhere else.

Good luck registering/smogging it in CA. :D
Ditch that exhaust too. The tickets will pay for a nice new one in 2 weeks.
No cat = go to the BAR! Congratulations!
Welcome to California!
How long are you staying? If it's for a short time, you won't get hassled for SR or anything with out of state plates AND license. But if you plan on moving here permanently, I suggest selling your coupe, and buying a stock car here, as cars that are already in CA are easier to register than out of state cars. Just buy a California S13 and swap over all the parts you want to keep. As for being hassled, I've been here for over two years, and was only pulled over once (knock on wood), when my exhaust came unbolted at the cat. I had to pop my hood, cop saw my redtop, and let me go with a $10 fix-it ticket for the exhaust. Just behave yourself and be courteious, and you should be able to stay out of trouble.

I also suggest buying a Cali car and then just swapping everything to that one. Registering an out of state car is a hassle, especially if it has illegal mods.

You have to get shit signed by chp, sell your car and buy another one here or buy a shell here and swap your parts. Damn that sucks

He is fine, but he'll still need to register his SR-powered coupe here. It will not pass smog and inspection. That's why it's highly suggested that he buys a Cali-registered 240, and then just swap things over.

here's some info: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/newtoca/newtoca.htm
from site:
You will need to:
Complete an Application for Title or Registration (REG 343)
Submit your out-of-state registration certificate
Submit your out-of-state title (If you have it)
Provide evidence of the California Smog Certification
Provide an odometer mileage certification (If your vehicle is less than 10 years old)
Bring your vehicle to a DMV office for verification of the vehicle's identification number (For your convenience, we recommend that you schedule an appointment by calling your local DMV)
Pay the fees
that's all to it

If you can use somebodys address in PA, id keep those PA tags. Hell, keep your PA insurance too. If you get pulled over, just tell them your temporarily working in CA on a project...show them your PA license, tags, insurance. If you get into a car accident in cali, just tell your insurance you were visiting...I'd do everything in my power to keep my tags out of state.
Wait...my tags ARE out of state...FL rocks!!!

what happens if the same cop sees you drive the same route year after year? lol...
i think as long as you drive properly you should be fine... but then again there are those cops that pull a car over just because it's modified... it's a chance thing...
