How to identify Differential?
Hi guys,
I'm curious is there a way to Visually identify the different nissan diffs out there? if you go under a car and look up, from the outside just lookin at the assembly can you tell "yup thats an S14" or a Q45 or GT-R diff etc etc? basically like this thread except for diffs: http://zilvia.net/f/archive-faqs/142...ification.html

Note: ABS have longer pumpkins vs non ABS diffs. This is important because drive shaft length differs because of this. Shorter driveshaft is with larger ABS diff. (the 2nd half anyway) (ps, you can find this by searching)
Quick LSD check is to turn one wheel, if the other turns, you at least have a VLSD. (I mostly put this here for search reasons for the next noobie that comes asking)

when I searched for Diffs I only found results pertaining to VLSD and final drives...
I couldn't find any pics.. so from the outside they all look the same? only "long" and shorty versions? no stamped codes e.g. 05U ? no visual differences? (fins on the rear cover for example) etc... I remember a few years back I helped a friend swap an R200 into his S13 200SX, and one of the diffs had a cooler with it as well... but they were the same length

The VLSD originally had a bright Orange VLSD sticker on them, but many of them wore off. Like this

I'd like to bump this thread back up..
new question.. what RPM is the car supposed to be in 5th? I feel the gear ratio is SUPER long.. my rear end is super locking, parking lots and such is not fun... (hence why I think it's been changed out) and in 5th gear at 60mph i'm at like 2,500-2,600rpm... which i think is TOO long..

J30 vlsd have a longer final driver. Cooling fins don't mean Jack since s13 all have them except the s13 super hicas model which the cooling fins were more towards the bottom and the drain plus is pointing down and not towards the rear. S13 also have no bushings for the 2 bolts nearest to the drive shaft. S14 z32 j30 have a bushing and longer bolts but the only way you can tell if it has a vlsd or LSD is to spin the wheel or pop the rear case and by looking at the actual unit the inside

no man I'm not curious if it has an LSD, and secondly it's an S14 not a 13
I'm saying i'm wheeling hopping and chirping in parking lots and slow tight turns.. it's deffinately got an LSD (i'm hoping it's not welded) but the ratio seems super long... (it has front bushings) its an S14 so I'm asking what is your rpm @60mph in 5th on the freeway?
