First working prototypes of the caster plates are finished.
For just the 15-20 miles I drove on them I could feel a really big difference in front grip, especially in turn in. The car tracked straight, and there was still enough self steer to make daily driving easy and controlled but give you really good feeling while turning on off ramps. After the alignment the car is the most predictable that it has ever been. I am very anxious to go to the Ready Set Drift event at Pocono Raceway on September 14th. Took the car to play on the dyno at Overdrive Automotive and after a few hours of playing with the Nistune software I was able to get some decent numbers out of the car, but I am far from content. An electronic boost controller will be a purchase in the very near future. I thought 24psi would be enough to get me into the low 500 hp range but apparently my estimates were off by a good bit. After some good tuning tips from their in house tuner I was able to get it just shy of 400 to the rear wheels on their Dynojet. The guys from Overdrive were awesome to work with. They allow dyno rentals to tune your own car like I did, or you can hand over the controls to their in house tuner. If you are looking for a place to take your car deff give them a shout! Sorry for the one shitty picture I did take. I was too amped to finally get the car running properly. After the dyno time the car is a completely different animal. The drivability is drastically improved, and the power once the turbo comes on is just an absolute blast. I was disappointed in my numbers until I left the shop and got on it a few times on the way home. It has been a solid 12 hours and I don't think there is much that could wipe the smile off my face. |

Thanks man, I'm still iffy on the front. Sometimes I like it, others I dont. This weekend will be the first track testing of the caster plates. I am super psyched for it. Will be the first time of having the car on the track actually together and happy. if anyone is interested in coming to watch, Ready Set Drift is having a drift day at Pocono Speedway in PA this Saturday. READY SET DRIFT for more info. |

Wow, it has been a long time since i updated this. Since the last time I posted a lot has happened. I went drifting some more, remembered how fun it is to drive a race car on the street, sold some stuff, got a winter car, did a whole bunch of design work and vinyl cutting, bought a house, got most of it renovated and moved in, and am finally getting to where I can work on the coupe again.
So, to pick up where I left off... I hit the last RSD event of the season at Pocono. The track was crazy fast, and was my first real time doing 3rd gear transitions. Shiftlocking down to 3rd to initiate a drift is a crazy experience. The first part of the day I was battling over centering issues. In the shop and around town it didn't look like it was going to be an issue but in full motion the problem very quickly showed itself. I finished out the first session doing shallow angle slides to keep it off of lock. The reduced caster made initiations much quicker. there was no delay between turning and the car following. It made the car much more flickable and am very eager to make a few changes and get the car back out next year. To correct the over centering issue all I could do was put caster back in the car. I had no way to build bump stops at the track. The rest of the event went pretty smoothly and i got to run multi-car tandems for the first time in over a year. Towards the end of the day the foam in the fuel cell started plugging up my fuel pumps so I had to spend a bit of time removing all of that and digging it all out of the walbros. That foam stuff has been nothing but a problem all year. I will be having baffles put in the tank for next season. 3rd gear dirt drops. Pic of the car sitting in the pits. I am really going to miss the missile look next year. To me, this car just screams exactly what it is, the bare essential needed to do what it is supposed to do and have an absolute blast doing it a video from Bravo Whisky of the event is here Figures the only footage is of me under the car fixing the fuel pumps. Stopped at Quaker Steak and Lube on the way home. If you guys have a chance to stop here they have the absolute best wings ever. Drove the car to work and around town a bit, really did forget how much fun driving a car like this on the streets is. The looks on peoples face when you floor it and break the rear tires loose at highway speeds is the best thing ever. And this is where it sits right now. Fuel system back apart to finish properly cleaning all the bits of foam out of it. Plans for this winter include a lot of preventative maintenance. Lots of loc-tite, and drilling and wire tying nuts and bolts to make sure nothing loosens up unless I want it to. I want this car to be super reliable next year. A lot of time finishing up and double checking that everything is as it should be. No more stupid little problems. I plan to build a functional splitter, undertray, and rear diffuser, aswell as some functional rear aero. Not sure if i want a gt style wing, or a spoiler. There will be a lot more suspension tweaking. I need to get more rear grip. I ran the entire pocono event on 1 set of rear tires and that just should not happen. Been doing a lot of research on tie down and pop up shocks. I am also working with RLD Fab to develop some roll center correcting front and rear knuckles. We may put together a full bolt on angle kit for s chassis cars. Finally I plan a full respray and vinyl wrap for the car. I have had this particular design saved on my computer for a few months and I still like it, so it will be based roughly on this. So thats where everything sits. Now that I am all moved in and settled a bit, I'm crazy anxious to start working on things. Next drift season is approaching fast! |

Was wondering how you were getting on.
When you say over centering you mean the tie rod end is binding? I've done the same strut top rotating (netting a reduction of approx half a degree of positive camber on full lock) and gone to s14 LCAs. Street driving has been fine with a noticeable reduction in tracking, but am testing properly this coming weekend at the track. Ive seen guys use a bolt-and-spring lock stop setup to good effect on steering bind |

I like them, but I went with accord headlights because there are always so many in the local junk yard. If I damage a set I can get a replacement quick and on the cheap.
Are there any events planned this summer in the Rochester area? I wanted to go to Battle at the border last year but I didnt end up making it. |

Few quick updates. The garage is finally organized and work has begun.
We took the trans out of the Lincoln and sent it off to the junk yard. It was a fun project, but with it down on 6 cylinders, and a few other issues it was time to move on. Alex has something else big in the works. He just has to finish up his fiero project first. I started by taking everything apart. I am just starting at the front and working to the rear. Fixing things and making sure everything is proper as I go. Front body panels off, intercooler and radiator out. Alex is in the background fingering his belly button being a jackass. This is where it sat last night. front end suspension completely apart. I am moving the rack further forward to hopefully eliminate any chance of over centering. Alex's fiero is in the background. It has a Cadillac North Star engine shoved into the back of it and that thing moves. it will be a damn impressive car once its finished up. |

Small update. Got the steering rack moved forward as much as I possibly could, I have to lengthen the steering column before I can put it all completely back together. I quickly threw the suspension back together to see what steering angle looked like with the caster plates where I wanted them. It is going to be ridiculous once i get the knuckle design finished up.
I took the fuel system apart so I could clean out the fuel pumps. This is all the blue foam that was stuck inside of them. Horrible horrible stuff. This weekend should bring a whole lot of progress, I'll finally have a few days to just crack down and get things done. |

Sticking to the theme of fit and finish this winter, I started mocking up a splitter/flat bottom/rear diffuser setup. lately I have fallen in love with the looks of time attack cars, and with a need to fix the rear rockers of the coupe, I thought it would be a perfect solution. I have 1/2 of the rear mocked up (just going to copy the finished side over to make sure it's symmetrical when finished), and the front splitter basically designed. I have been using corrugated plastic from home depot to design with, and plan on using alumilite and aluminum to make the final pieces.
It is hard to get pictures of the rear because of how things are placed in the garage, so this is the best i could do for right now. This is the front splitter. I think it needs to be about an inch wider to fit the front properly, and I need to round out the edges a bit better. The exhaust will stay above the rear diffuser, and go out the drivers side panel behind the tire. |

It has been a good long while since I have updated this. I am going to try to put this in as close to chronological order as I can remember.
Over the winter, a lot changed. The truck went away, and I ended up with another project. Kind of keeping that under wraps until it gets a little further along. Next, the engine came out of the coupe for clean up. I resprayed the engine bay, painted the motor, and spent a good amount of time detailing things to make it all look nice and happy. I also made some ducts for the silvia bumper to bring air to the rad and intercooler. Couldn't decide on a bobber, or a cafe racer. Found 2 for sale so now I don't have to decide. Left is a '79 gs750, right is a '78 gs1000 I have also been working on getting my sr hatchback finished up. Would like to sell this car soon. Have the best garage company in the world help'n out. It's almost done. Have to put the exhaust back on, button up the interior, and it should be all set to move on to the next person. This was my first 240. I built it 6 years ago. Gona be sad to see it go, but I just don't use it enough to justify keeping it. Someone else will use it much more than I do. Around that time I started promoting my design and cut vinyl business. I launched a web page to sell automotive based stickers and apparel. (shameless plug) www.81-17.com to check out the designs, or inquire about custom design, stickers, promotional items, or apparel. On may 10th I set up a booth at the Ready Set Drift skid pad event at Pocono. it was a crazy last minute decision and I wasn't very well prepared. I didn't get to take many pics because I spent most of the time tying to make my booth look a bit more professional. I received a burnout nomination, so I threw the coupe together and responded. Did some signage for a local restaurant s13 rendering Miata rendering I finally found some time to be productive on the coupe again. I did some body work Quick spray on the fenders and bumper In my usual last minute fashion I got the car wrapped Saturday for the Ready Set Drift event at Pocono last weekend. The coupe wasn't in shape to hit the track, but it looked great parked next to the 81-17.com booth. Sorry if this was a bit pieced together of an update. There has just been a lot going on and in all sorts of different directions. I should be buttoning up the red sr hatch in the next couple days, and then I'll be able to dive head first into finishing the coupe up. Doing the vinyl stuff and going to events with it has been a blast. Psyched for what the rest of the year has in store. |

Small update.
Saturday I drove to Albany and picked up a new toy. 1980 Porsche 924 turbo. It is all stock, and completely rust free. For some reason it isn't getting spark, so hopefully I'll be able to get that figured out tonight. Sunday I said goodbye to my red hatch. It was kinda sad watching it leave, but I needed the money for home renovations more than I needed another s chassis. Now that I have been able to cross a few larger projects off my list of things to do, I should be able to get back to my car builds. I'll also take some more pics of the Porsche tonight. I am still amazed at how clean this thing it. |

Yeah, I basically replaced one car with another, but its fair to say I sold the 240 for a fair bit more than I paid for the Porsche. I also feel it is a sensor, well more so a connection to a sensor. It seems most people that have a similar problem have a tarnished connection to the two sensors on the top of the trans bell housing. I forget what they are called at the moment but they read the flywheel. Before I can get to that point I have to put the engine at TDC and put the dizzy and ignition coils back together. The P.O. did a quick test of the basic stuff then sold it. The coil and dizzy check out fine, which leads me to believe it is that connection even more.

Awesome stuff.
Really enjoyable read watching you build up this car, and all your other projects. How do you find the time? hahaha

My shop activity/builds/project thread
Wow, it has been a while since I have updated this thread. Quick run down of things, the Porche still doesn't run correctly. I believe the fuel distribution block needs to be rebuilt. It currently only runs on cyl 1,3,4. Something is wrong with the fuel pressure to #2, its stupid and I currently hate it. I'll work on it again in the spring.
I picked up a '92 Infiniti m30 for a winter car. Found a set of used 240 suspension with drop zone sleeves and eibach lowering springs. I am surprised at how nice it rides. Since the picture I have leveled out the ride height. For some reason I have fallen absolutely in love with this car. If it makes it through winter without any issues I have some plans for it come spring time. I rebuilt the high compression ka as a ka-t. This will replace the horrible automatic vg30e in the m30. Since I got into motorcycles, I have always wanted to build a cafe racer and a bobber styled bike. Last spring I finally started a search for a donor bike to start one of the builds with. Luckily I found both of these in one place at an awesome price of $600 for both. The maroon bike is a '79 GS750, and my current build project. I bought it in running condition so I figured it would be the easiest to get done with the fewest potential mechanical problems along the way. The blue bike is a '78 GS1000. At some point in time it had been partially disassembled, but the engine still seems to spin freely so I don't think it will take that much work to get it running again. Once the bikes were home they sat in my basement until a few weeks ago. With winter coming I decided it was finally time to drag the 750 out and give it a good gunking and a wash. There was a solid 40 years of leaked oil and crud all over the engine and frame. Even after hitting it with the pressure washer and letting it soak in gunk there is still a lot of cleaning to do before final reassembly. The next step was to strip it down and start cutting things off. In two nights time it went from a complete bike to a bare frame. I extended the swing arm 5 inches and mocked things back together to see how I liked it. Then made some framework for the seat. Wrapped the framework in a t-shirt for a base, a few layers of fiberglass and resin later I had a seat pan. Here is the seat pan trimmed down to size. I am missing a couple pictures for the next part. To keep the ride height I wanted, it only left about 1.5" between the bottom of the frame in the rear and the ground. To fix this issue I raised the back of the engine cradle two inches. This gave me more clearance and set the motor more level with the ground. I put the engine back in the frame, and tacked on the rear shock mounts. I lowered the triple trees on the forks about 1.25 inches to level the bike out and get rid of a touch of the rake. This is final ride height. I welded the kick stand onto the right hand side of the bike to make it be a bit different than most of the other bikes out there. Mocked up the left side exhaust I then had to pull the motor back out to get some broken exhaust bolts out of the head. After the holidays I should be getting back into it. Maybe once the bike is done I'll stop hating cars again and get back around to making the coupe not suck as much. I really wish I could get the title of this thread changed, I think it has evolved to far more than a shitty missile build thread. |
