Post Ghosn: Nissan not pursuing partnership with Chrysler

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show, Plants/Manufacturing, Nissan, Renault

According to Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan, the Franco-Japanese carmaker is not interested in adding additional alliances with Chrysler at this time. While Chrysler recently inked a deal to have Nissan manufacture subcompacts to sell in South America, that is as far as it goes. "We have an OE deal. Period," Ghosn said during an interview at the Geneva Motor Show.
It seems Nissan's eyes are elsewhere. Watching GM sales in Russia double from 2006 to 2007, and believing the Russian car market may surpass Germany this year, Renault-Nissan wants its share of the pie, too. The first move was taken when Renault purchased a 25% stake in Avtovaz in December 2007. Avtovaz is Russia's largest automaker and the manufacturer of Lada, its best-selling brand. Now, the company needs to quickly transfer Nissan and Renault platforms and engines to Lada in order to modernize its lineup and compete with an increasing number of imported brands. Once that job is complete, Renault-Nissan will move towards assembling vehicles in Russia, as well.
Don't bet that Ghosn isn't still eyeing Chrysler, as he was quick to add, "We are going to continue to do deals with everybody when they make sense." Of course he will.

Thank God, we've seen how Chrysler partnerships have ruined Mitsubishi and strained Daimler... Let those motherfuckers drown alone

BREAKING: Chrysler and Nissan announce major supply agreements, shared products

Posted Apr 14th 2008 5:32PM by Damon Lavrinc
Filed under: Economy, Trucks/Pickups, Plants/Manufacturing, Chrysler, Nissan

Following the announcement this past January that Nissan would be supplying Chrysler with a new car based of the Versa's platform, the two automakers announced today that more exchange is on the horizon, including a new small car for Chrysler and a Dodge-based pickup for Nissan.

The unnamed small car will be built by Nissan in Japan utilizing a Chrysler design and will be sold in North America, Europe and other markets in 2010. On the other side of the spectrum, Chrysler will build a full-size pick-up for Nissan that will share design cues with the rest of the Nissan line and be built at Chrysler's Saltillo Assembly Plant in Mexico. Sales of the pick-up will begin in North America in 2011.

The move is part of an effort by both automakers to utilize each other's global manufacturing facilities and finally gets Carlos Ghosn, Nissan's CEO, the American automaker partnership he's been looking for since last year.

We're hoping on a conference call with Nissan to see if either automaker releases more information, but in the meantime check Chrysler's press release after the jump.

UPDATE: No word on whether or not the new Nissan pick-up will use Chrysler's hybrid drivetrain. Nissan spokespeople are not calling this a partnership, rather an "OEM exchange" and nothing more.
UPDATE 2: The Nissan pick-up will be a full-size light truck.
UPDATE 3: The Chrysler small car will be on a Nissan-developed platform and will be covered in Chrysler-designed sheetmetal. The platform will not be based of the Versa. Nissan reps couldn't answer any questions about whether or not the small car will share any design cues from the Dodge Hornet concept.
UPDATE 4: We're going to hop onto the the Chrysler conference in a bit and will update this post with information as it happens. Check back in about 30 minutes for more.
UPDATE 5: Chrysler and Chery are still working together. Chery has Chrysler drivetrain people working with them now. Chery-developed B-segment model is still in the offing, but no idea when it could come to the U.S.
UPDATE 6: Chrysler's design team just wrapped up styling of the small car, so it's doubtful that it will share many cues with the Hornet concept. Too bad, since the Hornet was well received. LaSorda says, "it's a beautiful design."

PRESS RELEASE

Chrysler LLC and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. issued the following press release on Monday:

AUBURN HILLS, Mich / TOKYO (April 14, 2008) – Chrysler LLC and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced two new agreements for the supply of products between both companies. In January, Nissan agreed to supply Chrysler with a new car based on the Nissan Versa sedan for limited distribution in South America on an Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) basis in 2009.

This new OEM exchange benefits both companies through range extension and the utilization of global manufacturing capacity. Highlights of the new agreement:

Nissan will manufacture an all-new, fuel-efficient small car based on a unique Chrysler concept and design. This new segment entry for Chrysler will be sold in North America, Europe and other global markets in 2010, and manufactured at Nissan's Oppama Plant in Japan.

Chrysler will manufacture a full-size pickup for Nissan. Based on a Nissan unique design, this truck will be manufactured at Chrysler's Saltillo (Mexico) Assembly Plant. In order to accommodate this product, Chrysler will shift volume from Mexico to its U.S.-based assembly plants that produce pickup trucks. Sales of the pickup in North America will start in 2011.

This latest OEM supply agreement extends a long standing product exchange relationship between the two corporations, with Nissan affiliate JATCO already supplying Chrysler with transmissions since 2004.

"Forging the right tactical partnerships is critical to the long-term success of Chrysler," said Tom LaSorda, Chrysler LLC President and Vice Chairman. "It also builds on the Company's inherent strengths, including the ability to respond rapidly and creatively to emerging opportunities."

"In January, we said we would continue to look for additional OEM opportunities with Chrysler," said Carlos Tavares, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Company. "This latest agreement builds on Nissan's proven track record to deliver win-win product exchanges with multiple manufacturers around the world," continued Tavares.
Since the signing of the first OEM agreement in January, the two companies have also agreed to maintain an open dialogue to explore further product-sharing opportunities.
Chrysler is like a disease,,,,ugh...

Yea, GM is the only domestic I'll back right now. (Ford might win me over soon though) GM and Nissan would have been an awesome relationship.

why pair up with any car manufacturers that are under strain? I don't understand the logic behind having a partnership with a struggling company.
I believe it would just weigh nissan down and complicate things.

An update on this:

More details have emerged about the next-generation Dodge Ram-based Nissan Titan pickup. Questions about how similar the two trucks will be have been partially answered, as Pickuptruck.com reports that the Titan and Ram will share only their doors and roof panels. The next-gen Titan will feature an exterior and interior designed solely by Nissan, which should put to rest concerns about a rebadged Dodge Ram. The two trucks will, however, share platforms, the Ram's new coil-sprung rear suspension, the cool RamBox storage compartment (despite hearing previously that the Titan wouldn't get this feature), and engines. In fact, in addition to a 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 sourced from Chrysler and a Cummins light-duty diesel V8, Nissan may offer Chrysler's 5.7L HEMI V8 rather than its own 5.6L 'Endurance' V8. Apparently the HEMI costs several hundred dollars less to build than the Endurance engine. Pickuptruck.com reports that the 5.6L V8 would still live on in the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 producing 400 and 450 horsepower, respectively.

Nissan is also reportedly going to produce a three-quarter-ton and one-ton Heavy Duty Titan, though these trucks will share no components with Chrysler products and be built alongside two other yet-to-be-announced light commercial vehicles at Nissan's plant in Canton, Mississippi.

Funny how you all neg rep me for it then it went down. This is not the 70s and as good as Nissan was in the 90s they are not the same company. Chrysler gets the Versa or something similar and Nissan gets help with full size truck development. The re branded Challenger you talk about is the lambda Galant which was rear wheel drive and for its time quite impressive. This same chassis was the foundation of the Starion/ Conquest twins the first of their time turbo rear wheel drive sports cars. This then led to the development of the 3000gt vr4 and stealth.

http://www.mitsubishi-motors.co.za/f...ant.asp#Lambda

Again sad mis information for an mis informed person who probably thinks they know all there is to know about JDM tyte rides and what they drive. Well guess what there have been japan based cars being produced since the 1960s and they are all good or great products. Just because you do not know about them or they are not that common here does not mean they are junk. These old skool cars made way for the sr20s and rbs that you all drive today.

you are truly clueless once again. First off Nissan was not a great company in the 90's they had some good cars but they were in Financial ruin. The only reason they exist today is because Renault bought a controlling interest in them and brought Ghosn in.

Now with that said current Nissan is a fucking amazing company. Their sales and profits are growing when a lot of other Automobile companies are not including your beloved Chrysler. Chrysler is the lucky one here that Nissan was willing to make a deal with them.
The GTR is better than even the Viper. The 350z is a great car the G35 and G37 are great cars, as well as the M45 and other models.

Why don't you state the obvious in your post. Most people know that American car companies have had deals with Japanese car companies since the 70's Not the 60's I might add. Oh wait you were born at the end of the 70's so even though you claim you were not alive.

Oh and by the way if your going to rip on Nissan's why don't you just go get yourself banned. This is not a Chrysler forum and the fact is no one here cares about your Hemi Chargpile.

The GTR is a good car I will give you that but at 70 grand it is out of the price range of the target market it going for. People buying a porsche will not buy a nissan proven once before with the old 300zx. I hate to tell you this but until the g/z coupes get a bump in torque and horsepower they are small dinky toys of junk. I drove a g35 before the Charger and it does not have near the torque or power the charger does. They have no turbos any longer on the top of the z. It is small and cramped even compared to the old zx it replaced. No T-tops nor 2+2 backseat like the old zs. You have to buy the g35 to get the backseat of which they sell more anyway.

It is funny how you all bring up my Hemi Charger when I never once said anything about it. Of course I would probably feel the same way with a car that makes enough torque to pull around a couple of Zs under full throttle backwards around a parking lot while I do donuts with them. Oh and my Charger can get to 60 mph in under 6 secs with 4500 lbs of weight lugging around and 4 doors.

Maybe now Nissan can make more powerful engines in the v6 and v8 line up that gets actual fuel economy and makes torque.

As for the age thing-- I may have not been born yet when the original Z was out or when the 510 ruled the world but I respect them. I am a fan of motorsports and cars in general and if this is what you all have come to these days. Some sort of disrespectful JDM crack pipe junkies who owns the complete fast and furious dvd collection and plays X-box all day then I really do not need to be here. All this makes all the smack talked about RICERS look legit. Maybe I brought it on myself by joining a RICER forum with a name like HEMI Charger.

Ok heres the deal, you sell both the 350z and the G35 short. On top of that you really must not read much about the GTR because its blowing Porsche's,Corvette's,Vipers and just about everything else under $125k off. It laps the Ring in 7.24 thats faster than a Viper could its faster than a GT2.
On top of that its been compared and called a baby Bugatti Veryon, just one of the worlds best supercars. Out of the price range of its target market? Ah no. 240sx owners are not its target market.

Ya I insulted your Charger because I hate them, they are ugly and overweight. Also partly because you so gladly attack Nissans.
You might consider the fact that your screen name is confrontational, your attitude is confrontational and you attack everybody and damn near everything Nissan. In effect you are a troll here.

If you do not having something to contribute towards Nissans besides negative comments and hate I suggest you find another forum to waste your blather on.

Oh and P.S. 300zx's were piles of shit IMO. In Japan the 180sx wiped the streets with them. Also Chrysler does not make a V6 that compares to the Nissan VQHR series V6's . There is a reason Nissan V6's have been the best V6's in existence for over 15 years. Oh and I did not make that up, just pick up Car and driver. Or look at consumer reports for the 350z. Rated a buy.
