Post C&D tests GT-R, runs 11.5-second quarter

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Nissan GT-R.

Scorching fast. That's the word from Car & Driver on a Nissan GT-R they were allowed to instrument up and abuse for a few hours. 11.5 in the quarter mile and a 3.3 second run to 60 mph are incredible numbers from any car, but this one only costs $70,000. That price tag would be preposterous for a Sentra, but it's a bargain for the ability to annihilate virtually anything short of a Hayabusa. There's been some debate about the three little words "engineering test mule," but scuttlebutt has it that the only thing Nissan was testing on the car were tires and suspension calibrations. From the report, it sounds like they got the ride dialed in, too - in comfort mode, you can reportedly thwack across expansion joints without bouncing your coiffe off the headliner. The biggest complaints? Weight (though apparently the car doesn't feel as ponderous from behind the wheel), and the interior design. The materials are said to be good, but haphazard is the order of the day for the dash layout. Oh darn, it won't come with the gorgeous cabin of a Ferrari 599 -- we suppose they need something to feel superior about as they watch the chunky arse of the GT-R rocket toward the horizon. A $70,000 supercar? We'll take it.

That's not accurate. Any modern sportbike will be able to beat 3.3 0-60 and 11.5 1/4 mile.

I've seen plenty of bikes run a LOT slower times then that. In fact most I've seen run 12's. The drivers probably suck. But you can' suck with the GTR.

Modern sport bikes are only running faster than that with professional rider's. Gtr, any person who buys it can run 11.5's. Amazing car, cant wait till the dealership near my house gets theirs in a bit. Still for sale if someone in the northeast is looking for one.

Are you saying that it takes a pro rider to run 11s on a sportbike? What does "professional" mean? I see no mentioning of pro riders on a Hayabusa.

Do you expect kids with new driver's license to run 11s in a GT-R? Because that's what people who run 12s on sportbikes are, assuming ideal track conditions.

OMG!!! The new GTR can't beat litre bikes in the 1/4 mile! It must suck donkey balls! Just like the other 99.9% of the factory production cars out there that are slower than bikes.

This part you added. I never said that. I was attacking the author's inaccurate reference to Hayabusas.

I used to go to the drag strip on a bi-weekly basis and I'm just saying most dudes with sport bikes are not running 11's. I'm sure their bike's are capable of it, but the driver's are obviously not. And these are not "kids with new license's" either. I've seen Busa's run far slower times then they should.

I would not expect most new drivers to be able to run an 11 in a GTR, but if the kid has had racing experience for many years before it would not be a problem.

Part of what people hate on the GTR for is that it's almost TOO perfect. You don't have to be a pro driver to drive the car like a pro.

But I think that's what makes the car such a wonderful engineering feat for Nissan.

I am saying that, I go to the track almost every weekend and the only bikes I see running 11's are modified quite extensively and they guys have been running for years. There are bikes like the busa that can run 11's easily stock but again, not just anybody is going to go out on a track and do it, they need to have been riding for quite a while and also racing.

"Do you expect kids with new driver's license to run 11s in a GT-R? Because that's what people who run 12s on sportbikes are, assuming ideal track conditions"

Yes I do, it is perfect, there is no worry about missing a shift since it is an automatic and the driver must simply do what they did in the numerous drag test videos to get it to rev to 4500 then launce. Granted it is not good for the car, but after a run or two a new gtr owner can be running 11's.

As being a rider myself, THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY KIDS who don't know how to ride, track OR street. Launching a bike at the track is quite difficult as it requires throttle control, clutch control, and leg control. One false move and the bike can wheelie and flip on top of you.

BTW, busa's arent fast, the GSXR1000 is faster. Busa's only put about 155whp stock and weigh over 530lbs. GSXR1K puts 160whp down and weighs 380lbs.

Launching a GTR should be very easy. Just like a Porsche GT2. Put it in first gear at a dead stop, left foot on the brake, right foot on the gas and the ECU automatically goes into launch control mode and limits revs to about 5k rpm. Release the brake and BOOM, you get 3.5 0-60mph.
