s13 Engine runs rough! PLEASE HELP!

Hey guys just to fill you in on what happened. Its a 1992 240sx, stock dohc.

I decided to pull my engine out and redo all the gaskets and learn where everything was internally (basically ripping apart the engine for sport). I set it up all correctly internally (TDC and such) put it all back together then into my 240 once again.

After reinstalling it back into my car, I tried starting it. It sounded weird, like a plopping sound, shakes a lot, and whenever I get it started it tends to blow a little black smoke around. It can't hold idle, throttle is not very responsive while idling and is very rough. Not sure what I did wrong, or what could have gone bad.

I replaced: gaskets (head gasket and up), fuel filter, wires (doing plugs soon), some air lines that had holes in them, and that's it I believe.

My exhaust isn't connected right now, so there's this thing, I have no idea what it is, but it connects to my exhaust then loops back to my intake box thing (some sort of sensor). Not sure if this would cause such a problem.

The tube connecting from your exhaust to the intake is your EGR system. It basically takes emissions from the exhaust and puts them back through the intake to improve fuel economy by burning fumes that have already gone through once. If you haven't blocked off the EGR properly or deleted the system by welding the exhaust outlet shut and getting an EGR plate to block off the intake, I'd say it's a start to resolving your issue, however I don't think it will completely solve it for you. Sounds like something else. Maybe post up a video?
