Greddy RS diaphragm rant

God damn I am pissed.

Haven't driven my car for a month, since I was on vacation in Italy, and I drove it today for the first time in a month.....glad to be back.

I popped the hood while it was idling, and my BOV sounds like a 75-year-old chain smoker with emphysema.

The diaphragm on the BOV continues to get "wrinkled" and causes it to stick open, making me hate my life.

I am gonna call Greddy or write them an email to see if I can get them to show some pity and send me a free diaphragm or at least give me a big discount.....they fucking charge $75 for a new one, and all it is is a piece of fucking rubber.

Ya I know right.

I found a new type-R online for like $160 (on clearance) at vivid-racing, but they fucked up my order, and by the time it got worked out, the 2 they had left were gone.

does the type-r need a certain boost level to open like some of the other "racing type" bov's?

Yeah, i am gonna.

I like the bov, but like i said, after only like a few months, the diaphragm seemed to start to get "kinked", and rather than smoothly unfolding as the plunger moves in and out, it kind of folds on itself and causes the plunger not to close all the way.

Under high boost, i think the pressure keeps it closed okay, but under half throttle blips and idle, i am sure i am losing some air.....this pisses me off too, bc if it's not closing all the way under boost, then my turbo is getting it's ass kicked bc it's having to work harder to reach the desired boost that the AVC-R tells it to reach/hold.

totally and utterly bullshit

Also annoys me bc everything else greddy i own is good quality :/

Not that I know of, you can buy different stiffness springs I believe (as an option when you buy it) and on top of that, you can adjust it with the screw, so I think it's not an issue.

It's always a trade-off....because a BOV is spring-controlled, it DOESN'T act like an on/off switch, so it's always a compromise between how much surge are you willing to handle and how easily do you want it to open if you lay off the throttle a bit

This is what sent me to Forge. Metal piston > rubber diaphragm, AND you don't have to bother with adjusting it, it just works.

The Greddy Type-R opens just as easily for even T25 powered SRs if you leave the spring totally soft.

It'll open at around like 3inHg if you have it soft enough.

I've adjusted mine to not open under light load, only opens when there's like 5psi of boost.

It's awesome.

It goes KA-CHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!!! at like 10psi on the T25.

I think once my RS kicks the bucket.. I'll either go Tial or type R.

If I liked the sound of crying babies being kicked down a hill...I'd buy an HKS SSQ.

the same thing happens to me on the stock valve which is probably rotten and crusty lol. on half throttle blips it stays open, i can just tell, so i lay off the throttle, then floor it, THEN it shuts. fuck, i'm gonna just get a type-R. you guys seem pretty happy with them. i had a turboXS on a 1.8T vdub i used ot have, that was all metal as well, no rubber, and adjustable with washers.

Yeah I have opened the BOV about 147 times to inspect it and it's not crusty, it just looks like the rubber has a permenant ridges in it that prevent it from smoothly unfolding as the piston opens and shuts.

And I know EXACTLY what you mean about the half throttle blips and it is open

:/

Are you guys running dedicated vacuum lines from the manifold to the BOV itself?

Because if you're not, that could be the problem...

But yes, GReddy Type-R is the hot shit. I've had mine for 5 years now, NO PROBLEMS!!

Also got the new version of the HKS SQV (gift to me), so I might switch between the 2 of these and see which one I like better, or just switch them out every month lol

Not fully dedicated, but I don't believe that's the problem.....like I said, I open the bov, and can physically see where the crimped rubber is preventing the plunger from closing all the way.

When I install my new IM (greddy), I will make use of the extra vacuum ports.

The Forge/Bosch design does not use a rubber diaphragm. There's a metal piston inside, and a rubber o-ring for sealing. The Forge is usually metal, the Bosch units are plastic (I believe).

I never had an RS, just a Type-S, and that stupid rubber diaphragm caused me some issues too, which is why I switched.
