1998 240sx se, what do ya think?

ok, ive been desperately looking for a kouki 240sx, well i found one, hes asking 4500$ so today went by his house just to glance at it. The rear tires are BALD some parts showing metal.
overall car looks good

aftermarket exhaust
5sp
interior is taken a part some
no cd player
no shift boot or knob
clear coat is peeling in some spots

stockstruts on lowering springs
ka24de (says it runs perfect, but im test driving it tomorrow)
seats look good
a dent in the driver side rear 1/4 panel (doesnt look too bad)

driver side windshield mold is coming off at the bottom

passenger side skirt clips seem to be broken or no hooked up

a couple small dings/scracthes(nothing abnormal)

and a nice ding on the A Pillar (this is probably the worst part of the car.(anyone know how to repair this?)

and the rest of the pics i took

also it has a clean Georgia title.
i am probably going to try and talk him down some, but let me know what you think. hopefully this will be my first 240

Foglights are missing. Turn signals look to be broken/not fit right, has it been wrecked? And don't say 'carfax is clean', that's useless. Open the hood, doors, get under it, go over every inch of the car to verify it's a straight chassis. Even a light front end hit bends the headlight brackets, requiring replacement.

And why is the interior apart? Who are these kids that just randomly take shit apart for no reason?

You can clearly see they're pointed upwards. That's not stock. The outer tab that locks into the bumper is probably broken off both of them.

Me personally, I wouldnt touch that car. Its been screwed with too much by some kid, and that usually leads to hidden problems that were not disclosed at the time of sale. Also, that A pillar dent is ROUGH looking and would probably cost a good bit to get fixed.

I would rather start with something a little more "un-molested" IMHO.....lol

I dont think its that bad, The body is the most important part
Not too shabby for an 11 year old car

Everything else can be fixed easily with just a trip to the junk yard

check the oil level, do a compression test on the engine, look to see if he's fucked with the Emission stuff on it.
If the emission componets are all there then thats good, shouldnt really be a problem
It just boils down to preventive maint, and his driving behavior.

check under the car look at the frame rails (this will show how he treated the car) check for oblivous signs of broken shit.

Price though seems a little high, but that just me, I try to get the best deals that i can on stuff, I dont low ball i just try to come to a reasonable compromise with them

EX: I picked up my 1996 S14 SE for $1,700 bone stock with a blown headgasket ($125 fix) and some body imperfections and interior needed new carpet and radio benzel. I dont mind though cuz i was gonna replace all that shit anyway.

And exactly how many "un-molested" 5 speed kouki S14s are left out there that cost at this price range? I say get it but I'd talk him down lower. If you can get it for $3k, I think its worth it. Point out all the stuff that you noticed already, the dents and paint would be some of the biggest things that should drop the price on it. Then nickel and dime him with all the lil stuff that needs to get fixed.

Biggest thing I'd be looking for would be rust...check under the car, frame rails, wheel well, etc...

yeah i agree, thanks to everyone so far for your input, the only things he said hes done is lowering springs and exhaust. so its not that molested, but the A pillar dent sucks

Also, looking at the picture of the front, the hood seems to be SLIGHTLY mis-alligned with the fender on the driver's side. It doesn't look as flush as the passenger's side. Maybe the hood's been taken off?? And could you give us a quick profile of the seller?

Being from Chicago, that car is MINT. Assuming the test drive goes well, I would def buy it.

I agree cause when i bought my first 240 he said it had a clean title and gave me a car fax with it i paid 4k for a 95 zenki with a SR but then i took it to my buddy he he saw that thay had welded a kouki radiator support in there so im guessing my car was crashed and they just fixed it themselves and i had no bumper support so look really close man! oh and for that pillar its a bitch to fix! so if u do buy it talk him down at around $800 bucks

how do you drive without a shift knob? lol that must be difficult...or painful...but yeah, unmolested and bald tires do not belong in the same sentence. i heard the same thing when i got my car, i didn't do enough looking into the car and ended up spending 2k more on my car doing repairs and shit.

i'd say, but it, part it out, and buy better kouki. but that's just me.

well i test drove it, drives like expected, normal for that year mileage, tranny mounts feel old, and may need alignment, check under the car and all is straight, ac only works on the 4 setting, the tails have been downgraded to zenki's,. so i think im going to offer him 3k and go from there, i dont think im going over 4k for sure though., checked vin and all is clean, one reported repair from an accident "10/17/2007 Automotive Parts Supplier

Dont part it out!!! Save the chassis from the junkyard if its not bent!!! Sorry, I just hate it when people say that, I think knowing how many of these chassis are left makes me sad everyday. Folks need to stop acting like these are throw away chassis and they are still in production.

$800 will pay for the headlights....

Like I said, I'd probably pay $3k for it. Its not the cleanest body, but its also not the worst assuming its not rusted to hell.

Left side quarter, and right side rocker? That would bother me. Use a good magnet and determine where the bondo is, and how much. Maybe they just popped out two dents, or maybe they cut and replaced panels. Open the trunk and pull the trim down to get a better look inside at the quarter too.
