kade problem: white smoke from hood!

Hey guys, had a bit of an issue and could use some expertise. Driving down the highway, noticed some faint white smoke coming from the hood. Don't think any was coming from the exhaust. Smelled like burnt antifreeze -- or at least I think it was. Whatever it was it smelled bad! Around this time, car lost power as well and had to pull off onto the shoulder. Now this leads me to believe I had a blown head gasket but since I didn't notice any smoke coming from the exhaust I'm not sure. I had it towed back to my house and it wouldn't start back up. I had to add some coolant maybe about 1/5 a jug. The car is currently being stored somewhere else so I don't have easy access to it but I pulled the plugs and looked at them. The tips seem fine as they were all "dirty" looking (also dropped one in the mud, oops). Can't really check beneath the car as it's been raining a lot recently but don't see any obvious leaks. I'll try and get a look under the car again this weekend but what else should I check for besides the usual hoses and stuff? Water pump perhaps? Thanks!

Yes to all the things you asked to check. Check your oil too.

Wouldn't hurt to do a compression test.

been dealing with a similar situation. replaced the water pump gasket and just found out the actual pump is leaking. hopefully getting a new one tomorrow. so yeah, check the water pump and gasket, hoses, overflow tank etc.
