B&M super stiff. Need help!
Alright, so I purchased a B&M short shifter for my s14 (sr) because my stock shifter assembly was wearing out. Anyways I got it installed, it engages fine but it takes some serious muscle to do so. You really have to put quite a bit of effort into just moving the damn thing side to side while its in neutral and even more just to put it in gear. I understand it being a shorter throw it will be a little bit more stiffer than the normal stock assembly BUT DAMN! I was hoping for at least a little easier/smoother shift with this thing.
So my question is, after searching around I saw that people were having the same issue with their short shifters. People suggested loosening up the bolts that fasten the shifter plate to the transmission. But that doesn't really makes sense to me honestly, but could that be it? And there was never any replies of saying that was the actual problem. Also could it just because it needs breaking in? Of course most things do, but I am unsure of this. Please, if anyone has any experience with this, your feedback would be greatly appreciated because I am on the verge of sending the damn thing back. Thanks! |

Okay so far (because I dodnt notice the Short Shofter thread) I noticed that the B&M is naturally really notchy and does have a rattle like sound like mine does. But does that also explain why it is like pullin a 10lb weight left and right while its just in neutral? Or did I screw up somewhere in the install?

My experience from the few cars that I have driven with them is that they are very stiff. To the point that I am not a huge fan of them due to that and how notchy they are.

A short THROW shifter just does that. It will not make the gearbox faster, and if you don't want to wear it out you are going to need more precision and kindness when changing gear.
Solution: install your stock shifter with an aftermarket bush (the small whitish one at the lower end is available separately and comes in OEM, aftermarket nylon, aftermarket plastic and aftermarket bronze flavors) and be done with it. |
