It's pretty bad guys. I'm at the other end of the country, but have family down there. Some of which I still haven't heard from.
Death toll is currently at 65 but likely to rise into the hundreds. They've rescued about 125 people from buildings throughout the city. But there's at least that number again of people known to still be trapped. Hundreds missing. This is truly heartbreaking to watch unfold. |

Yeah family made contact today. So relieved.
Government declared full national state of emergency this morning. The rail company I work for sent down 200,000L of water to help out, Air NZ has offered $50 flights to and from Christchurch (where it hit) to anywhere in the country. Most phone companys have put on free service for the next few days. At the moment it's still a rescue mission. With at least 20 people in 7 sites still known to be alive. Death toll is currently at 75, with 300 more unaccounted for. There's at least 15 more in a building that they've had to leave, as a 24 storey hotel across the road is twisting on its foundations more and more with every aftershock. A few of the D1 guys can't get their cars up for an event this weekend, which is unfortunate, but could be worse. |

Yeah I was so relieved to hear from them.
It's gunna be a huge cleanup when they get through the Search & Rescue mission. Cars littering the highways, abandoned, sinkholes the size of trucks/semi's. This country has never seen something so devastating |

It's not looking good. That building is supposed to have up to 50 people still inside it. They dropped a camera down, and saw 15 people initially thought they were alive, they now think they suffocated from a fire that was in the lower part of the building. That used to be a 4 storey building. 6 people have been arrested so far for looting/burglary. Now enforcing a 6.30pm curfew on the city, media included, so won't know any more til morning. |
