sold a car, issues came up

I just recently sold a car to a towing company since it wouldnt pass smog. I just wanted it gone. The deal was done. I handed over the title and it was all properly done. I had my NRL, since it was friday and way past dmv hours i could not take it.

Fast foward to today- I just recieved a parking ticket from sacramento. It was my old toyota camry. Apprently it was cited for not having evidence of registration or up to date tags(car was on non opt) the ticket was 225.00 not your average 50.00 parking ticket

I just remember about the release. I found it thinking my parents threw it away and completly forgot over the weekend about it. Its been 14 days since the car was sold. I know i have 5 days to inform the dmv and messed up on that like an idiot.

Now my question is....even after taking it. Will i still be liable? DMV website says i wont after the sale date which is august 06. The ticket company has given me an option of paying it or request an administrative review with for proof by dmv the car was released on a certain date. Then the buyer takes responsiblity since it happend after the due date? or will i get still have to pay it?

Im afriad my release wont do shit, since its been too long and the buyer will denie the charges. Im also worried they never registered it since i never got anything in the mail. If thats the case then i cant prove they have it or i sold it without evidence?

Anyone ever been into this situation? I kinda think im over worrying it too much but you never know.

Same thing happen to me and never mailed in the liability form.

No matter how long ago the citation was I was able to fill out the "release of liability" form on the DMV website and print it out along with a copy of my own personal bill of sale.

I would suggest you do the same and make a copy of the original release of liability form that you found and mail it in as well. If you made your own bill of sale with their signature on it then mail that in as well.

Funny thing is that it happened twice on the same car and I was able to prove my innocence.

Thanks, i got into a debate with my twin(yes i have a twin) he says i will get screwed and i will look shady when i come in to turn it in. He also believes the buyer will not accept the ticket and lie about even buying the car. Where the car was ticketed puzzles me... its an area with lots of shops and older homes. My guess they were trying to get the car to smog and some idiot from the shop had it parked out on the street and got a ticket.

if the ticket was given after or on the sale date then its not your responsibility. Just send in that release of liability and youll be good. Just make sure to take care of it asap cause sometimes stuff like this can affect your driver license or when trying to register another car under your name.

Qft!!!!!

To the op, as soon as the buyer took the car it's their problem.
Turn in the release of liability asap.

I've had this happen and my parents have had it happen as well, sold a car to some mexicans, a month or 6 wks later we get a call from a towing yard saying they towed our car for being illegally parked or broken down or whatev and we owe them $1k+ for towing and storage fees. Contacted DMV stating that we are no longer owners of the car and turned in a liability release and told the tow company to eff off. Problem solved.

I just turned in my release the other day. Im going to contact the dmv tommarow and see if the records for the car have been updated before i tell the parking company to leave me alone. Couldnt really get a real ok from the dmv since they told to use the express drop off.

How did it get back to you? Don't you have to take off the registration and plates when you sell the car? When I sell my cars I usually take them off and anything that can lead back to me except for the title.

It sounds like an easy situation to get out of though since you have all the documents to back you up..and it wouldn't look shady since you don't own the car anymore and the ticket was issued after you sold it..if anyone's shady, its the new owners who got the ticket.

In Cali the plates stay with the car.
Not like fl where the plate stays with the seller.
