Some sort of whining?

I haven't started my car up to drive for over a month because of a ref ticket, but today I decided to let it warm up while I searched the garage for old computer parts. Anyhow, when it started up it immediately had a whine that I didn't recognize. At first I thought there might be no oil pressure, I check the gauge cluster and it was fine. So I finish warming it up, turn it off, and restart it, and it persists. It sounds like it is coming from the right side of the engine bay (oh by the way I have a red top sr20det 5 speed etc). Then I notice something, when I put the clutch pedal in, it stops whining, when I let it out, it starts again. This is only when it is in neutral. If I am in gear with the clutch pedal out, it does not whine. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

u need to grease the throwout bearing and starter gear - those both can make that annoying whine...

If it goes away when the clutch is depressed it is NOT the throwout bearing (god I am sick of repeating that statement). That makes noise when the clutch pedal IS depressed. The starter gear WILL NOT make noise when the starter is not engaged and the fact that the noise goes away when the clutch is depressed tells me that the starter is not the problem. I have NEVER heard of ANYBODY greasing a starter gear either. The throwout bearing is used as the cause of every concievable noise by people who do not understand how it all works and the starter idea is just a shot in the dark. It sounds like your input bearing on the trans is a bit dry from sitting. Check the tranny level and drive it a bit and see if it goes away.

Cool thanks for the info you guys, it's weird because I pretty recently changed the gear oil (Redline stuff) and it has sat longer than that and never made that noise, even when the seals were bad and leaking...

yup maybe after some miles it would wear in, the reason why it dont whine with the clutch out and in gear cuz the input shaft and flywheel are spinning together ??????

Oh and to edit racepar's post the Bushing not bearing is in the rear of the crank i belive right???

and you might wana pop the tranny out and clean and or replace it excessive wear and play on that shaft or bushing is not good

Well it wasn't doing this when I was driving before, so after I get things settled in court, I will start driving it again and see what happens.

sadly yeh, whatever it is, is likely anything that will require taking off the trans......not fun so up to you to just deal with it and hope its gone or a bearing going which shouldn't cause anything too bad to happen, but you never know i guess

Haha nice, well if I drive it around, should it work itself out? I admittedly know nothing about transmissions.

Yes It Will Wear in BUT in Maybe 2000k or so miles after it having too much play, you could start to have real problems inside the tranny I would deffinately not try and just WEAR it in nothing good can come from that

take it to some one who knows whats up and wont rip you off if your in socal i know some good peps

^^^ It's the same thing, you can run the needle bearing or the brass bushing. I his case sounds to me like his bushing was not greesed up properly and may have gummed up a lil in their????? but what do i know

Okay so I drove the car yesterday just around the neighborhood (so as to minimize the chances of it getting impounded) and after a while the noise went away. I will drive it later and see if it's still the same...
