Zenki or Kouki SR?

I got a s14 sr i'm rebuilding and I would really like to know if its a kouki or zenki...

I've been doing alot of reading and NO ONE has a defined answer...

I read something about the VC bolts, mine has studs on the corners and the middle, the rest are bolts.

also, If i were to get a kouki ECU and harness, would I be able to use it on a zenki motor?

Because no one calls SRs Zenki or Kouki those apply more to the body type.

As for SR's

You have Black Top, Red Top, and then Black Top with VTC....

There are certainly differences between Zenki blacktop SR's (VTC) and Kouki blacktop SR's (VTC) - the big one for me is ECU code and wiring, since there's virtually no documentation on kouki SR's (NA ECU I believe). First couple swaps I did with those were lots of trial and error.

I don't know if Zenki/Kouki SR harnesses are interchangeable, but my guess is yes if you have the sub-harnesses as well.

Count the # of wires coming out of the ECU. There are 4 sections.

Zenki SR has 8/10/10/10 (the only S-chassis with this sequence)

Kouki SR has 8/7/8/10 (same for non turbo Zenki and Kouki and all S15s)

All S13 SRs are 8/7/8/9.

hope this helps... its old ass info I had from 01'

Kouki SR definitely has different wiring than S15, but yeah, same ECU layout as I recall.

Easiest way is the Physical Measure of the ECU plug side to side.
Zenki is a bit larger than the Kouki.

With the S14's ... yes you can run a Early Harness, Ecu, Maf on a Late Engine.
and the other way around.
Can do the same for S15, but you have to change valve cover, and ignition coils also.

IIRC the MAF plugs are different too. So you're swapping harnesses, make sure you got the right MAF too.

Whats the reason you're asking for a difference between the 2 anyway? Is the engine already swapped in or you're still prepping to do the swap?

you should be strapping up your flame suit, because you sir havent the slightest clue what youre talking about...wikipedia....jackass

poster i am running a 98 motor with a 96 ecu/harness. runs great. no sense in beating your head against the wall trying to get the kouki ecu wired up. just go with the older ecu/harness(sounds like you have no ecu/harness right now), they will be easier to find also.

Late model s14 and s15 sr20's have heat sink fins on the head like the later model blacktop s13 sr20's.

Zenki S14 Sr20det: Smooth front

Kouki S14 Sr20det: Half finned front

S15 SR20det: Fully finned front

Second picture is kind of difficult to see but they are definitely different. (Look to the right of the VTC hump)

As far as quality and internals they are identical. Another telltale difference between kouki, zenki and s15 sr20's are the sensors on the intake manifolds.

The Zenki SR's got the red coolant temp sensors while the later model S14/S15 sr20's got the blue two prong coolant temp sensors. They also had other stupid little additions like ratcheting oil caps.

"mewantkouki" is correct. Look at the head for indication of what engine it is. You can run either ecu, wc (zenki) or na (kouki), just as long as you use the corresponding harness, ie, wc ecu w/ wc harness. You can change the harness from kouki to zenki without problems (maf, cas, etc). Kouki s14 comes with a different turbine though. It is the same as s15 except it does not have a divided exhaust housing.

its not the same. part numbers are different, s15 is slightly bigger and dual ball bearing. s14 turbos are the same size but zenki is journal bearing and kouki is ball bearing. that fact alone should theoretically make the maps different from a zenki a.d a kouki motor since the kouki motor will make power earlier than the zenki. may not be wise to run a zenki harness and ecu on a kouki or vice versa. someone correct me if I'm wrong though, Jordan may be able to add wiser insight than me.

I run a zenki ecu w kouki motor. Afr is very slightly high between 2-3k, mid 12s. There's not a lot of load on the motor at those revs tho, so its really not a problem

I have been playing with s14 sr's exclusively for the last 3yrs. Currently have a kouki s14 sr, w/ zenki harness/ecu and I have no map issues.

Yes, the part number is different between kouki s14 and s15, but the only difference between the turbo's is the exhaust housing...the s15 has a divided exhaust housing, whereas the kouki s14 does not.

this is the kouki harness plug and works with NA ecu

zenki is wider and works with WC ecu, and only uses 22680-68f00 maf

if your building it and need something, i got this
power fc with commander and kouki harness wired for s13 for 700 shipped
