How long have you been playing? What is your handicap? What shots do you prefer and what shots do you fear?

I actually didn't get out at all this year.

I am a very casual player. Handicap is too bad to even worry about.

I enjoy short to medium iron shots. 175yards and in.

I can't seem to get past the "mental block" of a water hole. No matter how much I try to ignore the water and just make my normal drive, I shank it right in the drink.

A bad day on the course is still better than being at work.

Been playing since I was 12, now 25.

2 summers ago, I was a 1.8 handicap, but the course I played at stopped letting me use the range, and I immediately starting getting worse.....just so little motivation now....now I am around a 5 handicap.

Hit a natural high draw.

I fear having to hit a really straight tee shot under pressure.

I am a long hitter....when I am hitting it well and straight, most drives carry 270-290 in the air, but the result is that when my timing is bad, my driving is erratic.


I really enjoy shaping shots, particularly around trees, out of the woods (haha), and into tough pin positions.

On snap! Tree recovery is my specialty. I'm better with unconventional shots than trying to do a regular shot.

I started playing this season. Up until the end of the season I was probably a mid-20s handicap. Right now I'm probably double that if not more.

My favourite shot is the full swing approach shot under 40 yards with my 64* wedge.

My second favourite shot is my 5 wood on the fairway. People always tell me the wood is the hardest but this is the easiest for me. Sometimes my iron is hit or miss, but the wood is usually pretty decent.

I can get my 5 wood to carry up to the mid200s yard so I don't even carry a 3 wood. Just my driver, 5 wood, and irons/wedges.


My least favourite shot would be a sharp cut. I'm not good enough to be able to shape my shots on cue like that.

Don't play that shot!

You will almost never see pros hit that shot, and they play on significantly faster, less receptive greens than you (or I) play on.

Most higher handicappers tend to hit wedge/pitch shots WAYYYYY to high.

The key to hitting it close is to control the trajectory and use spin.

I hit my sand wedge like 85 yards on a HALF swing, bc I keep the trajectory reasonably low and use spin to stop the ball.

Granted, this takes practice, but if you watch the pros in person or on TV, you will see that on pitch shots, they make shorter swings and hit the ball quite low, but with a great deal of spin.

I hear what you're saying. Unfortunately I'm not at the point where my spin control is good enough.

I can control loft and distance much better so I like to hit it high for soft landing. I can usually get a good look at a one-putt anywhere between 85-50 yards to the green.

I know you're supposed to favour roll over carry, but because of my lack of experience I'm not as comfortable with the chip and even the half swing pitch.

I KNOW I need to spend some more time this winter with my instructor to work more on my iron.

I started playing when i was about 10. The summer when I was 14 i played every day during the week and started getting pretty good. I was an 8 handicap from 14-16 and never really improved so i gave up and started getting into cars. My lowest round ever was a 70. I play once or twice a year now and shoot in the high 80's. I still have a good swing, but only playing twice a year my game is very inconsistent. My specialty is any shot using 6-SW.

I used to golf when i was in middle school. Took lessons and all that jazz..

Then high school came around and I broke my leg, and never played again until recently.

I'm 23 and I've been hitting range balls for about a month now. Bought some used Taylor Mades for $130 and got a free driver from my step-dad who is now giving me lessons.

I was supposed to go to a par 3 course with my friend today but it's raining and I'm sick so we decided not to go..

Anyways, I'm still getting trying to improve and be able to hit decently consistent.

Can't wait to get out on the fields!

I just picked up 2 drivers from the thrift store the other day, lol, and hit the driving range. Pretty fun stuff. My brother said people where staring at me, (I was playin' Happy Gilmore status), haha. I went to this place in Anahiem, called Islands something or other. It's pretty cool... Basically a lake, with different targets/islands. I'd like to play on an actual course, just to see how I do. I actually did pretty good, with my $3.95 club, lol.

I just like going to the driving range. I've been going to the same driving range that was in fast and the furious (4?) in K town for years! For some reason I like the 9 iron and the sandwedge. Bunker shots and chipping are fun >.<*

Something I used to do when I was 14-15 then kind of lost it. But now that I am growing up and need more things to occupy time being as all my friends think its "cool" to knock chicks up. I find alone time on the green awesome. Plus it gives me and my Dad time to hang so I enjoy that.

I played varsity golf back in highschool...

with that being said... I haven't played golf since highschool.
I mean, i hit the range every now and then... but I can't remember the last time I even played a 9.

My short game was on point... but I couldn't hit my driver for shit. I'd rather hit my 3 or 5 wood than my own driver (I had a 9.5* Tailor Made TI )

but just recently... like last week, i found some new golf friends, so I might play more often. We'll see

I completely lost my swing. Last month I was carrying the driver around 240-260 and the 5 wood around 220-230. I was greedy and tried to carry the driver 300.

Now I completely lost my swing. Everything pulls like crazy and I can't fix it.

Time to go back to my instructor and get yelled at.

So ever since I posted this, I've been going out consistantly at least once a week. The past few weeks, I've gone out twice a week.

My ball striking has gotten 10x better as I actually make good impact and create good divots past the ball. My driving is still inconsistant but the past 2.5 rounds, I've seen drastic improvement. (bringing the driver over my right shoulder, if that makes sense)

My past 3 rounds I shot +26, +23, +20. The +23 was on quite a difficult course as well.

I am also keeping track of not only my score but fairways hit, greens in reg, # of putts, and # of chips.

I think it's very plain to see/say that ever since I started up golfing about Nov of 09, I've become completely addicted to it. A weekend without golf is total misery now.

I was having the same problem having an erratic swing, but these tips that my instructor told me helped me out.

1) Make sure you have the correct grip, not the grip that you "think is correct." Make sure on your left hand your index finger and thumb is making a V shape which should be pointing towards your left armpit and two of your knuckles should be pointing out. With that being said it ends up being a strong grip.

2) Swing lightly or easily mostly using your left hand to do the swing. I forgot who use to say it but remember to think of "tiny bubbles" as you swing.

Also note that I'm nowhere near a professional or that good, but just giving you tips of what my teacher gave me.

Once I got those down my swing improved, my shots went more straight and farther then before. I also learned that I am a long distance shooter I can hit 200-220yds with my 3 iron.

I started playing golf about a year ago. After a month, I made it onto the boy's varsity team.
I was almost decent until I got rear-ended.
I've only played once after the accident, but I think my new handicap is 15-20!
Last time I went to the driving range, I was averaging 200-210 with my new driver

Shit happens to me all the time lol.

Love it when you show up to your lesson and swing once. Instructor walks over moves your shoulder, taps your leg then tells you to swing. Shits straight as ever hahaha

imho, you're prolly trying to kill it, thus why its pulling everywhere. Maybe youre over gripping it and over swinging it... relax a little on the swing maybe?

I'd rather hit consistently straight with moderate distance than hitting super far and uncontrollably. < i know, captain obvious right lol

yeah bringing back a half year old thread...but i was gonna make a golf thread but found this one...now i dont have to

ive been playing for about4 years and love it. my lowest score to date is a 92 on a par 72. i just started last summer breaking down into the 90's, but still have my 100+ scores lol...i made the mistake of when i first started i wasnt good at driving at all...like most people. well i practiced and practiced with my driver to the point to where now my short game is suffering, gonna hopefully straighten that out this summer tho. i use callaway clubs except my wedges are clevelands. cant wait for spring to get here!! the pga tour kicked off a day or two ago i believe and i missed it, im curious to see how tiger is gonna do this year. cant be much worse than last.
