Intermitent difficulty going into 1st from stop, clutch or transmission?
I have been slowly noticing over the last couple months that shifting into 1st from a stop wasn't as smooth as I remembered. First thing I did was change the fluid but it didn't make much of a difference.
I am now at the point were intermittently I cannot get it to go in to first. I have been having success with putting the shifter in 2nd and then into 1st. If I am on a hill rolling forward or backwards seems to help as well like it the problem has to do with the gear's meshing. Taking the clutch in and out doesn't help. Once moving shifts are smooth, clutch isn't slipping, no new noise's/vibrations. Anything I have googled seems to point to clutch system, master/slave, worn out clutch but this doesn't feel like a usual clutch issue. Looking for input before I start talking things apart. |

You have to be more specific, is there grinding or can you feel anything? Does the engine want to move when you shift into first? That would be the clutch not releasing when the clutch is pressed. As already mentioned, adjusting the clutch pedal rod, would be 2nd on the list, but looking for leaks and for fork travel should be a 1st. The 3rd would be pulling the clutch for inspection. If you believe it to be the transmission, I'd swap or upgrade, no rebuild. Mo
How many regular miles you got on it? None, it takes premium!

Thanks for the reply's. I will try adjusting the rod that's simple.
There are no grinds. It feels like 1st gear isn't meshing properly, there is no way to force it in, but usually just putting it in second will move something, and then it goes into first. The weird thing to me is that it is intermittent. doesn't matter if transmission is cold or hot. Most stops, 70-80% of the time it works fine, then randomly it just won't go into first unless I roll or throw to 2nd then back to 1st. exedy clutch and flywheel with around 20,000 miles. Transmission, I have no idea how many miles- probably lots, i've put over 100,000 on it myself and I don't know the previous life of it. came with the sr and I have had to rebuild it. |

What do you mean by this, does the car want to move if I put it in 1st with the clutch pedal pressed in? If that's the question, then no. The clutch works the same as it always has. The engagement zone is still in the same area within the first 4inches of pedal travel. No issues with starting once it is in first.

I have the same issue with my car.
It only happens about 20% OF THE TIME. I have adjust the clutch pedal accordingly. But I have the same issue still. |

This has happened to me with every manual transmission vehicle I've owned. Although it rarely happens, putting it in second and fluffing the clutch lets me put it in first when it does.

I adjusted the clutch pedal and took a look at the slave over the weekend. Still getting a lot of movement at the slave and moving the pedal up only moved my engagement pt, still having the random trouble getting into 1st.
I have pretty well decided that this is a snyco problem because rolling forward, while the clutch is still pressed in, allows me to find a spot were the shifter will just slide into gear. Anyone disagree before I go find another transminssion |

I bet your gear is worn to a knife edge and the case bearing is shot along with the syncro. You may be able to replace these parts along with pilot bearing and be good to go. These trannys are getting old and harder to find a good one! I have two junk trannys front bearing and gears on both junk. lack of oil major culprit

TRY THIS:
With the car OFF can you put the car in first gear and shift without problems? When was the last time you changed the clutch or had it looked at? The reason I ask this is my clutch failed on me a few years ago without warning. I couldn't put it into gear unless I turned it off. Once I cranked the car, it would start pulling like the clutch had been disengaged. I literally drove it home with no clutch and matching the revs. When I came to a complete stop I turned the car off, put it in first, and cranked it up when it was time to go. The clutch had NO material left on the disc.

Last time I looked at the clutch was 2 years ago, roughly 20,000 miles. The friction material looked in great shape with maybe 0.5 to max 1.0mm of wear on the flywheel.
I am doubting the clutch system as it is intermittent but I might as well pull the transmission and inspect it before since all that works has to happen anyways. I like the idea of the rebuild too, even if I pay a shop to do it at least I know what I am paying for. |

Every 240 I have owned has done this. I just started the stop alwase go down into second then to first. My guess it's the lockout in side the trans.
