sr20det - lose the upper chain guide or no ?

Upper chain guide sr20det:

I've had quite a few motors, some of them I ran with this some without, and now its time for another motor and I just put in cams and I'm wondering... wasn't there a nissan article that says to remove this for whatever reason ?

any opinions ?

Get rid of it. If you try order the part number for it, the nissan system will pop up a notification that you are to remove it and you can't order it anymore.

Yup, nissan pretty much drop it off their parts list since its not needed. Get rid of it, it doesnt do anything at all. If you're chain is loose, itll slap against it. KAs got the same shit and everybody got rid of theirs too.

i took mine out of my SR.

like it was alraedy stated, if your chain develops slack, it could grind against it creating an annoying moan. i've heard it on a KA before and it's awful.

also, if you develop that much slack, time to get a new timing chain tensioner.

not to beat a dead horse, but wouldn't it be better to keep it on then because you would know if your chain is too loose from the noise and time to replace the tensioner as stated above?

No, don't leave it on. I was slack and didn't get around to removing the one off my girl friends KA and it broke off and damaged the head and valve cover.

While it's less common on SRs, I have seen numerous ones on KAs break off and lodge into the chain, shearing the cam gears off or breaking the upper timing cover. Since the chain rattle would be apparent without it anyway there's no point keeping it in place.

bringing back a thread from the dead, been about 4 months since I removed that guide - and i'm getting a weird noise from where the chain is, its like a whining-rattling, almost sounds like a dry rubber seal rubbing. the moment i give any throttle it goes away, only at low idle rpms. could this be the chain hitting the valve cover from slack or no ?

no its a generic pic off google

i can take a video so you guys can check out the noise, and pull the valve cover next week to check things out.. what should i look for ? timing chain scraping marks on the valve cover ? scoring marks on the cam lobes ? perhaps oil pressure too low ? could it be the CAS seal ?

Search on SR20forum.com for the part numbers. The new oil tubes are a updated version of the old tube and has enlarged oil holes.

Contact Greg from G-Spec Performance and he'll get you the updated oil tubes.

Edit: This is the part number I used to order the tubes 15108-53J03 from G-Spec.

Go to the dealer give them these 2 numbers; 15108-53J03 and 15108-53J13. They are roughly $30 a piece.

thanks

i changed the camshaft jizzer tubes, its still making the noise

upon further investigation it seems to be making the noise only when the motor is fully warmed up aka oil pressure lowest at idle (i think around 19psi ?)

maybe my hydraulic chain tensioner is on its way out ? although that seems like normal idle oil pressure to me

i've bought the new style chain tensioner in 2007 so could it be tired that fast ? but fuck then again my motor isnt exactly under 'normal' operation either i've been tracking 5 - 10 times a season and i'm making 400wheel

that or chain stretch so the tensioner can't get rid of all the slack ?

inputttt.....

Are these for the B14 or B13?

B14 has larger holes, same installation.

I know it may be tough, but is there anyway to video the sound?

Tensioners do go bad (upgrade with B15 Sentra ones) but in the same respect I cant' see how it would make a whining noise...but ya never know right?

Oh cool! I wish i had JDM parts program, I only have USDM

But yes, B14 are the 'upgrade' as they feature larger squirter holes. Much like B15 tensioner is best as well.
