I am in the market for a SR20DET 240sx. I test drove a S13 yesterday with a black top SR20det with stock internals, in Indianapolis and was driving around 465 N went into 4th gear, the boost kicked in then WHAM! Car had no power and I had to pull to side of highway.

It appears the intercooler piping came off the intercooler. We got the intercooler piping back on the intercooler. It started up and drove away, but some black smoke was coming out of exhaust. Not sure what would cause this.. I am just not sure if I should give it another test drive. The car ran fine other than the CAC pipe coming off.

I'd say use your instincts, but it looks like you're searching for confirmation bias. What's the harm in test driving it again? If the owner suspects something is wrong due to the first test drive, they're more likely to not let you drive it again and try to convince you to buy it as-is. I'd be more concerned about the implications from the results of your first test drive (i.e. if they couldn't secure something as simple as their intercooler piping correctly, what else could be poorly done?) than whether or not the motor suffered any damage. Running rich for just a few moments isn't likely to cause any catastrophic failure.

He is going to get it professional repaired, as far as piping clamps etc. I believe the engine was swapped in 2011 and done by a professional. But it makes sense to question what else was done "sloppy". The AC compressor is gone but they left the hose there to hang..makes me wonder..

that's extremely common, hardly anyone ever runs ac with a sr swap and removing the lines is a pain in the ass especially if it was an after thought or they just did a basic pull a ka and drop an sr in a weekend swap, if the engine was out for a while I could see pulling the lines but I would just let them hang if I was trying to complete a weekend swap,

biggest things to look for would be any aftermarket parts, if there are aftermarket parts how well are those installed? generally aftermarket parts show the actual owners ability to work on their car, look for spliced wires, butt connectors, hanging electrical plugs, etc most of the time sr swaps are structurally sound its almost always the wiring that causes any issues

The SR scene is all new and fresh to me, so it would be hard to point out or notice any aftermarket parts. It does look like it has a aftermarket BOV, but other then that I cannot really tell. There is one wire not plugged in next to the throttle cable, looks like a two pin molex connector. Other than that and the left over AC line it looks fine.

if it is sketchy, and it breaks, good luck trying to figure out someones hack job wiring and methods they used to swap it all. not to mention, be ready to fork out a bunch of cash for a mechanic to diagnose what some not so much mechanic did to make the car fail in the first place... I'd stay away, either clean and nice build, where everythings shrink wrapped and zip ties all neat and tidy or run far away.

ya its a hard call, the unplugged plug is probably knock sensor if its close to the head or possibly tps, the tps sensors and wiring harnesses are sometimes different, if the car runs good and everything looks to be in good shape, worst case you could buy a brand new harness from chase bays or something

I was thinking knock sensor after looking at the FSM. But why would someone not hook that up.....

if the knock sensor is unplugged, don't buy the car.

As far as the coupler popping off, its pretty common. buy some t-bolt clamps and call it a day.

Does anyone have a picture of the knock sensor? The plug that is not plugged in is hanging off the wiring harness and has two female pins that I remember..

the knock sensor has a jumper harness, its about 8 -9 inches long that runs from the sensor under the intake to the front of the engine, look for a little 2 pin plug between the temp sensors on the intake and the head, usually its bolted to the timing cover with a little bracket and sticks forward towards the radiator

Okay. Yeah I don't believe the one hanging is the knock sensor.

The hanging wire sits back toward the firewall and close to the strut mount, closer to the throttle cable. Only about 3 or 4 inches long.

probably one of the idle control sensor plugs or the egr control sensor plugs

He's asking too much for it anyways. $3k s13 at the most. Slightly off topic but you should check for rust on the frame rails as well. Most s13's coming from your area are going to have rust issues. You could use that as leverage to talk him down to $3k if you really want that car.

Yep. I took a dive and bought it. I will post up pics later. Frame rails look good it was an original Georgia car. Everything works thus far, except I am not sure about some of the wiring.

I am now trying to tackle a problem with the tail lights. They don't want to turn off....

The brake light switch is either loose or has gone bad. It's under the dash behind the brake pedal arm, it's easy but your back will hurt.

Thanks! I found the fix online yesterday but have not tried it yet. The car sits so low and I am a fat man, so it sucks haha. I will try today.

The s14 i bought a few years ago outside of cincy was a sketchy test drive, bumpy, steering out of rack, no fluid in power steering, and horrible body work. But i bought the car and fixed it up, then regretted it..... So don't do something you will regret, if you like it, get it, if your iffy about it then you probably shouldn't get it.
Some parts are easy to replace, some are a pain and hard to come by.
