My last car was a slushbox, but it was slow anyways. Now I have a 5 speed 240sx. At first, my 100hp auto Jetta was quicker than my 155hp 5 speed 240sx, because I sucked at driving standard. hell, I never revved over 3k. Now I shift higher when I want to haul ass and I can see how much of a difference it makes.
When I drive other peoples, I yell at the tach. "Oh comeone, 2,800rpm? You have 5k left to go!" It sucks when it is pulling good in 2nd, but shifts so soon. Good for economy though.
And that is what rocks about stick, you can shift at 3k everyday for economy, and rev till redline on those rare occasions you want to merge ahead of the cars already on the freeway.
Whoops, sorry, I went off on a tangent &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/devil.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

To tach out most autos you can just drop it into first and "shift" as needed. Plus most automatics shift at least a grand before redline if you get on it.
