Fuel filler neck problem?

My fuel filler neck is super loose inside my car. I don't know if it's supposed to be loose or not to be honest. I live in Oregon so I rarely see my fillerneck/gascap but is it supposed to be loose? When I say loose, I mean if I put my hand on the cap, and shook it, it doesn't even feel like it's really attached to anything, but it does jump back to the spot where it was.

I went under the car and reached for where the filler neck and hose connect and there is NO clamp. Can anyone else confirm that there is no clamp? (No reason there shouldn't be)

I'm still getting around 26-27 MPG with it, but the gas smell lingers randomly. (Can't tell if I take a right, left, or accelerate when it smells, it's completely random)

It's a 95' Zenki.

Pictures would be nice! Thanks.

There was a write up on how to mod the filler so it wont move. Matter of drilling and running a screw to hold it in place...just can't find it now.

Hey, i just happen to see this when I was searching for "MPG" LOL

anyways, here's how I did it. I think flip is talking about my pictures as well. I've had this done on my S14 in 2008 and still holding up just fine. Also if you have a loose filler neck, it'll randomly kick off the fuel nozzle off the car because it's sitting at a wrong angle etc..can lead to the nozzle hitting the car as it falls down and bit of fuel spill on the car. no bueno.

anyways, here are the pics, very self explanatory.

there is a hole below the filler cap already for "draining" purposes if you don't know how to properly take the filler off your car, drill that out to bigger hole and fit a 1" long 10mm bolt through it.

next step it to make a bracket, the bottom bolt hole is already there, it's the wider thread kind with plastic insert. Use the nissan 10mm bolt for that as well, and bend the bracket in such angle and put a lock washer and 10mm nut and tighten the bolt/nuts down. result? sturdy filler hole that doesn't sag. Top Tip of the day. Yours truly.
