s13 ECM has no POT or RED LED for Diagnostics???

I have searched all around and cant really find the info I am looking for.

I have a 98 s13 blacktop in my 93 240sx. Im not 100% on the ECU information because the sticker on top of the ECU is half ripped off!
What I do know is that the is a large J on it and I can read the #'s A18-F81 G85(5 could be a 3)... The rest I cannot read. Its either a J4 (manual) or J5 (auto) ECM and is for a type X.

Here is a pic to better show you: http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...ZkMzF5NTQx.jpg

Im not sure what the deal is but my ECM does not have any way, that I know of, to test for problems. I opened it up and im sure I found where they would go but there is nothing soldered in there. It looks to have came that way from the factory but I cant be 100% on that. I got the ECU from Heavy Throttle along with my motor. Can anyone give me any info on this ECU and why it does not seem to have this feature? I know some newer ECM's only have the knob and you have to use the dash light but there is no knob on mine. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Here is where I think the POT and LED should be: http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...ZkMzF5NTQx.jpg

Some more info for you guys that might help.
The ECU is either a j4 (manual) or j5 (auto) ECU and is for a 97-98 type X s13 SR20DET. I need to know how to do the diagnostics. Maybe something like turn the key on with foot on the brake then turn it from on to off like 5 times or something like that.

Someone must know, help me out guys/gals.

THANKS

it might be the auto one. NemeGuero had an auto ka24de ecu for the longest time, and it didn't have the diagnostics light either.

is the swap pretty much done as far as engines in the car, harness done and all you need is figure out if its the right ECU??? If it is then, why dont you plug it up and do the diagnostic using the dash light? Check engine light on the dash should light up just like the POT.

POTT=Potentiometer Its not an LED but its missing both!
It very well could be that the ECU is auto. BUT it does not have the POT (knob that you turn) or the LED on the ECU. As I said the LED is not the big thing. The question is how do I put it in diagnostic mode if there is no switch (POT)?

The car runs pretty dam good and has been for the last 7 months or so. However, I would like to run the diagnostics on it and I dont know how. Someone must have done this before.

Thanks for the input

This is an 98 SR20DET Type X ECU.

I am also thinking this might be an auto ECU. Its a J5 or J6 thats for sure! Theres got to be a way to get this thing into diagnostic mode.

In the U.S. 96 and newer are obd2 and have a diagnostic data link connector under the dash. No need for LED or POT. I'm not sure about JDM.
__________ - connector is this shape, 16 pins I think.

HAHA thanks for the little drawing but I am familiar with the OBD2 diagnostic port. I would like to be able to check the codes myself without the OBD2 reader and honestly, I doubt it would work properly anyway. (Jp does not go by OBD's) I don't have a CEL on right now so Im not even sure if anything would come up on that. On the other hand, I don't know if I have ever had a CEL so I don't know if it even works or not.

My 97 KA ecu had a POT, no LED...

My roommates 97 180sx Blacktop ECU had a weird little pot (alot smaller than the normal nissan one), and no LED... manual ecu.

I thought I heard the 98 ecus were weird in terms of using a daughterboard on them... so maybe there is some other trick to get the codes

Sorry I couldn't offer very helpful info...

IIRC, automatic (type x) is the J5
it probably doesn't help your question, but thought i'd point that out

congrats, you win a prize.

i have a 97 RHD silvia and to do diagnostics on it you HAVE to use the consult port and hook up the tool. obd was not available on that car. so....idk about how you'd do it w/ a swap, but i know that in order for me to do it i eithor a) have to use the tool from nissan(or buy one at like 1.5G's) or use the snap on(or other brand) adaptor for any generic obd scan tool. then again i have an S14, i presume it's the same scenerio though.

if you have access to an esm of some sort you can figure out how to pull codes via the light on the dash. On most obd1 vehicles you can jumper 2 pins in the diagnostic port to get the light on your dash to blink the first set of numbers is the 10's spot...there will be a slight pause then the next set of blinking lights is the 1's spot...it will do this 3 or 4 times then if there are anymore codes it blink the next code. I can look it up at school tomorrow and see. Unless someone can tell you on here

I know, what the heck is going on!? 14 y/o thread bump

Anselmo Girl, I'd recommend making a new thread if you want help on your issue. Most of the people from this thread are probably in a nursing home now.

If the ECU is wired up right, It'll flash the MIL (maintenance Indicator Light) on the gauge cluster in concert with the LED. If your ECU is missing one, you should be able to put it into test mode and read the MIL light in that case. Check the FSM for instructions;
