I failed smog...miserably :(

When I went to smog my S13 yesterday it didn't do so well. All the emissions levels were twice what was allowed, and my gas tank couldn't hold pressure. But the guy confirmed my beliefs that my car is running VERY rich. But the thing is, it idles just fine. So my 2 questions are:

He smogged it as a 1990 with a single cam, but I have a double cam from a 98, would that make a difference?

If every single thing on my car is stock, why would it be running very rich?

There could be multiple reasons why it would run rich even if it were stock. I could be wrong but I believe that when there is a sensor going out or something of that sort that the car will run rich just to be safe.

replace the coolant temp sensor, check your EGR system for leaks, replace the spark plugs / wires / dist cap / rotor and set the base timing to stock, Run sea-foam PROPERLY, and check for vaccum leaks.

if all of that is in working order, the car should pass emissions.

^ what he said for sure! Catch up on all the routine maintenance. You may hate it now, but in the long run it pays off. Definitely check for vacuum leaks, i bet those line are brittle and splitting by now.
