some engine troubles (please help)

ok. so.. bassically my situation is my car has a flat spot around 2500 rpms and I was wondering where I should start looking for my troubles. today I gave it some gas while stopped in neutral and slowly gave it more gas to get the revs to rise up. when it reached about 2500 the tach would drop or stay there and the would start sputtering and I could feel it cutting out as I kept it there, but once I gave it more gas the rpms got out of that spot and the motor only had a little bit of sputtering but was better then when I was holding it at 2500. any imput on this would be great. I just need some direction as I am very noobish with diagnosing and need more practice with the KA. thanks
