What do you guys think of this one?
I gotta order this up quick. I know someone said no LED but it looks kinda retro. Or how about this one?

Na, not my style. Those are too...stylish for the rest of the bike. I needs something incognito.

The problem with small LEDs is that he's got that tail-light-shaped hole behind the seat - I say go with a OEM-style non-LED tail, to match the rest of the bike.

You could always throw an LED bulb in there if you wanted to go future-retro

I have rebuilt several motorcycles and have put more miles on bikes than on cars, so I have some suggestions based on my experiences.
From the pictures I can see that your brake line and throttle cables are too long. Didn't see the clutch cable but I assume that it is the same. Aesthetics are one thing, but you will have lever effort issues with incorrect length cables. Can be fixed cheaply by taking them to a small shop that can build cables and have them shorten them. Ergonomics are different for everyone, but just by looking at it I would think that the bike would be more comfortable (and it would help the cable situation) if you mount the clip-ons above the triple tree on the exposed portion of the fork legs. This would also make the bike easier to handle at low speeds. It sounds like you may have fixed your carb problem, but you should look into richening up the idle mixture. Bikes in general, but especially of this era, came jetted lean from the factory. It is simple to do, and a half turn on the pilot does wonders. Lastly, my ninja streetfighter had no gauges and no mirrors. I was fine with no gauges but missed the mirrors. If I had it any longer I would have gotten bar end mirrors, with clip-ons it is a pain to try to look behind before passing, especially if your shoulder/arm is in the way. One bar end mirror for $30 on the left and you will be happier, and avoid a ticket. I found this buildup searching for information on any virago street trackers / cafe bikes. Its looking good. |

It is a street legal version of a dirt oval racer (a dirt tracker or a flat tracker), examples are:
And the bike that has been wining for over 30 years, the harley xr750 A lot of the racers are v-twins, and the virago engine looks more appropriate, but when people build them for the street they often use vertical twins. I thought that the virago would be a good base for a cafe or tracker project, but as you found too there isn't a whole lot of info unless you wanted to put on saddle bags and tassels. |

That's why I just did my own thing. Obviously I'm biased but I think my bike turned out to be a pretty rad Virago. Becuase I'm not into the whole saddle bags and tassels look.

Update on this bike:
Unfortunately I didn't get the thing running in time to ride it this year. I ended up taking it out to my brother in laws shop in Richfield and while it was great to have every tool and air tool known to man to work on it it was really inconvenient. He talked me into doing a little more to it then I was really wanting to do to it this year and because he was super busy and I never worked on the particular projects. What I did get done was half assly painting the swing arm which looks a LOT better. I'll be redoing it properly this winter. We got the led taillight put on. Just had to weld up some brackets to mount it too. There were a few other mics projects that I'm probably not thinking of. Ultimately the hold up came down to a bunch of electrical issues that we were not able to solve. Adam (lasttimearound) has talked me into rewiring the whole bike though which is something I really wanted to do from the start but didn't have the know-how. Hopefully with his help that will go well. So the project wasn't abandoned, just hit some hiccups. Plans for winter: -Rewire bike and get everything working properly -Re-paint subframe, tank, and rear fender -Possibly eliminate the gauges all together -And last if money permits using a kit a guy is making do a rear rim in the front swap. It completely changes the look of the bike and looks awesome.
