Differential output shafts and axles/cv boots

I bought a used limited slip differential, supposedly out of a j30, a few days ago. I swapped it into my s13 pumpkin and it went together great. Only issue is the original output shafts appear to be different lengths and the new diff looks as though it need output shafts that are the same length...

Do I need to find a shorter output shaft to replace the long one?

My other question is: how to i replace the inner cv boot on the rear axle? I can't figure out how the axle come apart...

thanks

You should have two different length output shafts with the VLSD, however, I do not know which side it should be installed on. Intuition tells me the passenger side gets the longer shaft, but that may be completely wrong as I have never dealt with a VLSD. It's a 50/50 chance, if it doesn't seat all the way on one side, pull it out and install it on the other.

If you have 6 bolt axles in your car, you do not need to swap them out. If those are your axles, take it to a local shop to have them swap out the boots.

i've tried both sides with the output shafts. and i measured the diff and it looks like each side is the same depth..

i already have the cv boots, i was hoping to do it myself. are the axles difficult to get apart?

Are you sure the stub is all the way home?

I have never taken apart an axle before. I'd start by completely removing the boot you plan to replace to see what you have.

I've tried hammering it farther into the diff and it won't go any farther

The shorter shafts were used. The factory open diff on the passenger side has a slightly longer input shaft

All the write ups I read on vlsd swaps (specifically the j30 vlsd) made it sound like I only had to change the diff internals and the ouput shafts wouldnt have to be changed... Now I gotta track down a shorter output shaft :/
