I just got a 92 fastback last weekend and I love it my only problem with it is the gas mileage is horrible. I dont get anywhere close 22 mpg. I get like 15 and i dont even race it, yet. Is it just because it has 113k on the engine or is there some other problem? I have tried the fuel system cleaner and i am running 92 octane fuel. Any help would be great

15-17 mpg is what you'll get on an old 240. This is what I used to get on my '91 coupe, and this is what I'm getting on my '91 fastback. I don't know any people who get anything better.

I have a 92, and I average about 22-24 city, and I drive hard. I don't think 17mpg is right. it's only a 4-banger. You should replace the o2 sensor, and get a new distributor, and rotor, and replace spark plugs, wires, and clean throttle body, make sure your MAF is clear of junk, and have it tested if possible. The EGR system may be clogged as well. This sometimes causes issues.
All things that can cause bad mileage. |

That sucks at the gas mileage. My last tank got me 350 miles for some 12 odd gallons, for a net of 29 (yes, I calculated it right) miles per gallon. This came up from a 25 average from before I changed my air filter and oil. I typically drive moderately (shift 4k rpms on average), but my primarily highway commute helps. I have a 5sp 92 as well. I don't even expect 15-17 out of my 4.something liter V6 pickup.
f your mileage is in the shits, check your air filter and fluids, pretty much everything Sykik said. And shift sooner, 3500 to 4000, or even less |

Well just to put another into the mix. My 90 with 125k get 20-21 average. I've tried driving like a sane person though one tank and it didn't make a lot of difference. BTW I replaced everything on the list as far as tune-up. It helped very little. The o2sensor did calm down the idle though.

My car has over 125,000 and I get 26 mpg in mixed (but mostly highway) driving. Even in city driving the lowest I've got was 22mpg. I don't know how you people get 15-17 mpg on a car that's running well. |

Some of those numbers are awfully low. Try a few tanks of super, if you aren't already. Also chuck some fuel cleaners in there and stuff. I seem to remember getting over 20mpg in my '91 SE, and that was an automatic.
Mileage now is around 30 or so, but that's because my car doubles in weight when it has occupants. =) |
