Tomei KA24DE Adjustable Cam Gears

Apparently they are offering these now. I'm considering going this route instead of the JWT gears but figured I'd see if anyone's already picked up a set and what their thoughts are.

if you're looking to get a set, contact BLUEMOON in costa mesa, they're an authorized Tomei dealer as well as the engine builder for a lot of FD, D1 drivers. @bluemoonperformance on IG

Isn’t tomei USA a spin off of the original tomei? I wonder what the quality difference is, that’s why tomei (og) drooped tomei USA to begin with :/

My main concern is whether or not the sliding adjustment is at risk of moving unexpectedly. At the same time that feature is pretty nice so long as it holds.

That’s a whole other discussion, but the cam gears have been in the works since well before the split. Originally, Tomei USA was just that. The USA branch of Tomei JP. Now they have parted ways and operate independently.

Ummmm that’s why there’s SIX bolts, just like any other slide cam gear from Titan or any other manufacturer. Hks only uses THREE bolts

That's what I was thinking when I first saw the design. The bolts have less leverage in keeping things from moving on the small KA cam gears, but there are 6 of them. I'm sure it's fine, and adjusting them looks pretty easy.

So what are you all planning on adjusting with these? Less overlap?

Hence my use of the word "unexpectedly". I would not expect that its going to move with 6 bolts but its still a possibility.

At that point, it’s operator error, not a flaw with the part.

Probably true but hard to say for sure without actually looking at them. Like I said, its my main concern but I also see it as an unlikely failure. I'd rather be over cautious than lose an engine.

Tomei says-apply thread locker to bolts and torque specs are 7.8nm-9.8nm for the adjuster bolts

I don't get your point. People have been using slide cam gears for AGES, and as long as you tighten the bolts, its not an issue. Why is everyone so paranoid about these ones? Did I miss something?

SR20 tomei gears have 6 bolts and I've never heard of anyone having one come loose before.

There's just more forces involved with the smaller diameter cams sprockets on the KA. It's like when you're in a high gear on your bicycle. The chain is under higher stress under acceleration. It's most likely why Nissan designed the upper timing chain to be dual-row.

It's probably fine, but I'd be crunching some numbers if I had stiffer valve springs and a high-hp KA-T. I don't know, maybe I'm just paranoid.
