I have only ever owned one 240sx with a cracked dash, all 12 others were perfect. Lucky me. I always thought the interior materials were quite nice for what these cars are. My current stable; a 90 coupe and 95 zenki are crack-free going on 24 and 19 years respectively. (that's way longer than whitney houston)
My 02 camry dash is shrinking away from seams like a cali grape going into raisin mode. My 06 RX-8 that ALWAYS had a sunshade in it when it was outdoors developed a crack in the passenger side dash/airbag panel at less than 60k miles. UTTER SHIT, Sold that bish. |

i dont think there is a difference between quality between the two dashes, i just think its an age thing. the s13 dashes are more prone to crack only because they are older.
by the way, in case you guys are wondering................. i called that shop that was previously mentioned in this thread a few weeks ago to gather pricing......... get ready............. 1500-1800 to re-do the dashboard 600-800 to do the door panel.............. PER DOOR PANEL hmm.... i did not realize that this specialized labor was so expensive. i mean, i paid less for my leather stitched dash than it costs to redo in...... VINYL. leather > vinyl |

Bought my 89 240with a cracked dash that looked like a road map. I found a clean dash in junk yard with 1hairline crack on left side of cluster. Didn't wanna buy it but it was 50%off day n said fuck it. Cleaned it up installed it n wouldn't u know, record heat wave. Only half the road map returned on dash. Cracks haven't gotten worse. Not sure if I'll do overlay or purchase ridiculously priced crack free dash.

Mine wasn't cracked, but it was close. I didn't realize how close until I started cutting and removing it. It was like trying to cut an eggshell.

i called a local upholstery shop a week ago or so. he quoted me $200-$300 to remove dash, repair cracks, lay suede or vinyl over it, and place it back. this was an interior upholstery specialist shop.
*local* as in inland empire area of southern california. i must find his number again...

^let me know if you find the number. If they don't have to remove the dash I wonder if the price drops because I would just pull a dash from the yard for cheap and bring it to them.

raul's auto trim (909) 983-6814 ontario california "to remove the dash, you're looking at about $500-$800 dollars, then add on the labor to completely refinish the dash" i kind of stopped listening after that so sorry i don't have an answer regarding bringing a dash already removed haha. he did refer me to a vinyl repair guy that does mobile repairs. the gentleman i called (760-559-4786) was very helpful. he basically said not to throw money away at it. the damage has been done over the last twenty or so years and there is no cost effective way to repair them. he'd be happy to do it, but suggested a dash coverlay or carpet, as the repair may not last longer than a year.
