Ok, so I have an 95 240 I just finished an LS swap on and after my dyno day to confirm my tune I get a wierd noise coming from my car. It resonates almost like a tuning fork when it happens, and I can't figure out where it's coming from.

When it's in neutral it doesn't do it. It mostly seems to be when I give it gas or when it's under a load. Around 70 on the highway it will harmonize real well and then it sounds like it's coming from everywhere.

I figured since that's the most power the chassis has ever seen that maybe I had tweeked a wheel bearing or something in the rear, but I'm not even sure where to start with this.

When it's morning and in town driving it doesn't make the noise. It only starts to act up if I hit highway speeds and it gets nice and warmed up then any speed over 30mph will get it intermitently.

Has anyone else ever experienced something like this before?

I just dug out my IR temp gun and my left rear wheel is 25 degrees warmer than all of my other wheels. Does that sound like it could be the culperate wheel bearing if that's it? I've heard bearings make the grinding noise never this sort of high pitched whine.

Its atleast an indicator of the location. Bearings can make a whining noise, it isnt always a grinding noise.

In my experience, the whining noise is an indicator that the bearings are starting to fail, the grinding noise is going to indicate that they are fully gone.

Ah, ok. Well I have a set of wheel bearings that came with the car 3 years ago when I bought it. I guess it's time to tear the rear end apart and get them pressed in.... Sucks finally get the tune lined out and the damn bearings start acting up.

It's really really hard to diagnose a random sound without hearing it...but uh that could just be me haha

Oh, I agree random sounds are very vaque and I had when someone ask me, "hey my car is making a funny noise" it could be anything really. I'm just trying to narrow it down right now. I figure since all the power is going to the rear wheels it would be back there that's housing the issue. Esp since it started up after the dyno. Not sure that the car has ever seen over 350hp/tq to the rear wheels on the stock bearings and shafts.

Unless an expert in the Rome, Ga are pipes up I'm stuck with arm chair mechanicing through the forums.

Oh, and it sucks I was digging though my junk for the car and it's the differential bearings I have.... Does me no good for my wheels.

Another question is there an easy way to help check the wheel bearing?

Ok, so it's def the rear wheel bearings. I got them off the car and the stupid front bearing seal stuck to the axle flange where the wheel bolts on. Hopefully one of the shops here in town can get it off for me.

i had the same exact problem with a car that was sitting in storage for a while. make a loud squeaking noise when it was cold or humid. took out the wheel bearing (left rear) and found all the bearings rusty so i lubed it up with some synthetic grease and its been fine since.
