When it comes to defensive electronic countermeasures (D-ECM), you have passive stuff like flares and chaff, which are designed to fool infrared- and radar-seeking weapons, respectively. They don't work very well, for a bunch of reasons, but mostly because even shoulder-mounted anti-air missiles are advanced enough to see what target is still moving quickly, and what targets are falling/slowing, and choose the right one. Air-to-air fired stuff is even more advanced, and whereas shooting a coffee can of tin foil out the side (chaff) used to be a decent defense in the 60's and 70's, modern weaponry sees right through that shit. Plus, when you run out of chaff or flares, you're boned. ... so that's where active electronic countermeasures become more important, and more versatile. You can analyze the signal coming out of a missile, guess on what it expects to receive, and then send back an even more powerful signal that tells it to go kick rocks a couple miles to the left for instance. Then there's offensive electronic warfare, where you 'sense' for radar signatures as you're flying into an area, jam them with a more powerful destructive signal (so they're now blind to the sky), and then if you're feelin frisky send a HARM missile right to where they were (radar-seeking air-to-ground missile). Or, you can just fly over an area and effectively jam the entire electromagnetic spectrum, so say bye-bye to cell phones, radio, TV, internet, etc - anything passed over the air or through an unshielded wire gets scrambled. To give you an idea of scale, 3 EA-6B's with the AN/ALQ-99 package that I worked on could cut off all communication in the entire city of New York! Pretty powerful shit. So yeah, there's a lot of tech that goes into high-power emitters that are also small in size/weight/radar signature, electronically beam-steering antennas, etc. It used to be all about who has the more powerful radar (to 'see the farthest'), but now it's all about who can see without being seen - stealth and deny-ability are king.

So cool, man.
Love the sound of the AN/ALQ-99. Is there a newer version now? More powerful or something? In other news, I can't believe the F-117s are now retired. I remember going to an airshow when I was younger and it was the first time I ever saw the plane in real life. I remember it was surrounded by soldiers with rifles ready to take care of business if needed. Now, that this is a relic it seems. I guess it first flew back in 1983 or something. AMAZING. That's older than me, yet the thing still looks futuristic. This makes me wonder what new stuff they have going on. Skunk Works and whatnot.

not too sure on the exact reason, but i believe it may be due to it being a training squadron and being that the super hornets are a bit newer and they have plenty of regular hornets but then again i'm not familiar with the platform yet so thats just speculation

One of my old babies.
Not a fighter of course, but I'm damn proud of them and had to post. I'm an Instructor now, so I don't get as much time with them as I'd like. In a couple years I should be back to the Flight Line again.

Jets are so damn cool.
I used to live on the Air Force Base in Bitburg Germany when I was a kid. My mom was in the Air Force. I always wished I woulda went into the military as a pilot.

Just think of it like this: We're not "replacing" them. They are just retiring, and we're going to step in to fill the void. Pharewell old phriend.

No, I was actually I-level in a different MOS. I respect the 46 though. I'd be crazy not to respect it after all these years. But I also realize it has to come to an end.

Wait, Marine Corp's retiring the Sea Knights/Chinooks and replacing them with the Osprey?!?! What the hell are you guys gonna be using for heavy lifting???
I've ridden in an Army Chinook in Balad...that shit was not fucking fun for one reason...that shit was leaking hydraulic fluid all over the place. You kinda get worried when the load master for the helicopter tells you that's normal. |

Marine Corps/Navy/Air Force all require a college degree, as well as you having to be a goody-two-shoes badass. Only the cream of the crop get to be pilots. Oh, and naturally perfect vision (or corrected via PRK, which is a much more painful version of Lasik). And you have to be under a certain height (6'3" or so for helos, 6' for most fixed-wing), be in fantastic shape, etc.

Our HEAVY lift platform is the CH-53 Super Stallion. They are currently developing it's newest incarnation which is looking very impressive thus far. The MV-22 can handle everything the Phroggies could lift, and then some.

I thought the Chinook was just the Army variant of the Sea Knight. They look identical to me. Also, I thought the Sea Knight was the heavy lifter, while the Super Stallion was the medium lift. Lastly, I just learned something new...didnt think that the Osprey was capable of lifting anything other than being a people mover.

CH-47 Chinook can handle roughly TWICE the weight of the CH-46 Sea Knight. There is a bit of a size difference between them, and numerous design differences.

THAT GUY: what are they replacing the 46's with? that sucks i popped my fast rope cherry outta the hell hole on one of them. i had never heard that they were being phased out
BRIAN: i'm not sure if he still posts on here but "Eugene" (name on here) if i recall correctly was at one time part of the fighting 31. i know for a fact he working on the navy flight side at one point. and as far as favorite squadron...HANDS DOWN the 1st avg during wwII aka "THE FLYING TIGERS" they were basically volunteers (arguably mercenaries) that came from US NAVY,AIR FORCE,MARINES...they flew the reknown p40's with their trademark tiger teeth. they flew for china but repped the US lol and were eventually absored and changed into a couple US units. and i think its the 23rd fighter group are the direct descendants and the ONLY unit authorized to sport nose art/ESPECIALLY the flying tiger tiger teeth art. and the rad part is like 80% of them were all ace pilots...not too mention they had one of the raddest pilots ever...double ace david "tex" hill...look them up and their history if your a squadron buff brian, you will def be impressed. |

I said we're not "replacing" them, because that denotes a certain air of disrespect towards the Phrog to some people. Technically, the MV-22B IS the replacement for the CH-46.

Try over 20 for the Osprey, and you really don't want to compare the 46's crash record.
