300 rearend

Can you modify the 300zx tt 3.70 rearend to fit the 5spd 240sx or does it "bolt right up"?

The z32 TT rear end is an R230 unit. It is larger overall than a 240sx's R200. It won't go in without some heavy fabrication.

A 300zx NA ('90+) rear end (3.91:1 I think) will fit, but you must swap axles for the 300zx diff to work.

Am I thinking of J30 ratios here?

yeah :/.

300zx na has 4.083, stock 240sx + s13 + s14 vlsd ratio, same unit, different outputshafts.

j30 is the 3.xxx ghetto style one. w/ different outputshafts.

:/ it'd be nice if i could find a set of driveshafts or output shafts for free.

ok , a little clarification here. the 93-94 J30 had the 5 bolt output shafts which are the same that are on the 300NA. The 95 and up ran 6 bolt output shafts just like ours.

ok, I'm looking for clarification I can't find in search. I have s13 open diff. will any lsd bolt in?
which ones?
the s13 vlsd will bolt it, or no?
I know that aftermarket and 300zx both take new output shafts... but they will also work with different axles?
I'm confused.

So far it looks like the z32 lsd from a 92 may fit with very little modification. I am in the process of trying to put the z32 inner cv joints onto the s13 axles. So far it looks good. The front mount on the diff is also a rubber mount.

The J30 and z32 NA dif use rubber bushings on the front mounts. The bushing is too thick for the stock bolts to thread in to subframe on an s13. Not to mention that the drive shaft on a non abs non lsd s13 is too long. You can squeze it in to place, but I would worry about the main seal on the tranny failing.

The best thign to do would be to swap the guts in to the s13 diff.

if you use the bushings from the J30 or 300 NA diff on the front mount along with the bolts that come with them they will bolt into a S13 . As far as the 300 differential goes it is a bolt in. following the above I have a lot of friends who have done it. As far as the J30 goes yes it has the abs sensor on the front which makes it 1/2 inch longer. which means you might have to shorten your driveshaft. That is actually easier and cheaper to do than removing the guts of a J30 diff and putting them in your stock differential pumpkin.

how is it easier and cheaper to take your car to a shop to shorten the driveshaft than it would be to take the guts out of an NA Z32 VLSD and put them into the S13 non-ABS non-LSD housing?

I think the reasoning they are talking about is getting the gear lash set correctly along with the bearing preloads and such.

Setting lash on a diff takes some special tools that your average person doesn't have.

Put it to ya this way. I am a professional mechanic, I work on cars for a living. I would rather have a driveshaft shortened, (or look for a new shaft) than swap gearsets.

The drive shaft doesn't need to be shortened to use the z32 rear end. The output shafts are different and the mounts are different.

The N/A or TT Z32 or both? If you're talking about the N/A only, then there wouldn't be any point because don't they run the same gears as the 240s?

Figured maybe the z32 3.70s might fit, since they're both independent suspension(which probably doesn't have anything to do with anything). Would be cheapest gear change available, if it fit without much difficulty. Was just looking for a cheap change I guess.

I have an S14 btw.

GlacierFreeze, yes only the NA z32's diff will bolt onto a 240sx, yes they have the same ratio, yes there is a point they have limited slip (which most s13 and a good number of s14 don't).

No, a TT z32 diff will not fit into a s13/s14 rear. It's internals won't fit into it either. Yes you could make it fit, but it wouldn't be cheap.

The only readily avaliable diff that has a different ratio is the J30, which isn't much of a difference. 4.08 vs 3.92

yo, yellow jacket, did you read the complete thread? the driveshaft talk was about installing the J30 VLSD. We had already established for the guy that it would be a lot more expensive to put TT internals in a non VLSD pumpkin .

Kevin your post was very good and quite accurate.
people once again there is a faq on this stuff. Use the search function or go to the faq section.

drift freaq: Yes I did read the entire thread. If you read Jsquared's post he was talking about putting the guts from a NA z32 rear end into the stock pumpkin as opposed to shortening the drive shaft. Not TT as you stated. I was mearly clarifying what he said. Yes people should check the faq as this question has been asked about a million times on various 240 forums.

As for my first post in this thread, the inner c.v. joints from the na z32 axles will not fit on the 240sx axles. It didn't work out after all.
