5 speed swap confusion!! NOT A NEWB searched - Zilvia.net Forums | Nissan 240SX (Silvia) and Z (Fairlady) Car Forum

There is a lot of info out there on the 5 speed swap.. it's just unorganized and confusing.

I've read everything I could find on this site and others but there are conflicting ideas about some things. I'll get right to my issues.

I have a 97 auto.. (well.. the tranny isn't on the car anymore but it WAS auto)
so from what I gather, i can use an s13 tranny as long as it's DOHC so I don't have to swap bellhousing. Cool, got that.

OBD2 speed sensor:
do I need one if I'm running an s13 tranny? I read somewhere that I should use the one that came with the tranny I have(s13) and elsewhere that I need an obd2 sensor? can I use the auto sensor?

ECU:
Now should I use my 97 auto ecu and do the wiring thing that was posted here...http://ka24development.com/cwilfert/...lectrical.html
or use an s14 manual ECU, or an s13 manual?! and the wiring harness.. I don't think i even want to deal with.. I have it, but I'd rather hack it like the link.

Clutch:
since I'm using an s13 tranny.. do I need to buy an s13 clutch? or s14? same question goes for pressure plate and flywheel, or are they the same since the trannys are compatable?

driveshaft:
now do I need a complete s14 manual? or just the front half? is it compatible with the s13 driveshaft "front half?" I've read I need a complete s14 ds as well as that i just need a "front half" of a manual 240 driveshaft s13 or s14

any help with any of these questions would be greatly appreciated.. I'm just trying to get my facts straight with all the info I've read so I can get my car working right.

Just get everything from an s14 you'll have less headaches.

Speed sensor: S14

Drive Shaft : S14 manual or 1 piece alum/carbon

clutch/fw: this bolts to the motor so get the S14 ones

ECU:S14 i am unsure if a auto S14 ecu will run a manual car i know that works on the S13 though so it may be worth a try

Wiring: you will need to do that no matter which ecu you use although most of the stuff is not really needed the only two i would worry about hooking up is 1. reverse lights and 2. cruise cancel (if appliable) neutral sw=blah then just jumper the park switch and fire the bish up

I'm using an s13 tranny.. does I stil need an s14 driveshaft?
guess I'll figure out the ECU thing on my own

You have to use the s14 speed sensor, but the sensor doesn't fit in the s13 tranny. You'll have to get a s14 prop shaft. The auto ecu will work with the 5spd, but you'll have the CEL on.

Finding a s14 tranny isn't easy but it's not like you're trying to find the holy grail.

I have a S14 tranny if your interested....but then again...shipping will be up the ass.

Anyways...you can use your auto ECU....but to follow all the wiring on the page you linked...you will need a 97 manual ECU. You will be find using the S13 manual flywheel bolts. I honestly don't know what's required to make the sensor fit...being that the sensor is mounted in the rear of the transmission.

Crank position sensor is only for OBD-II use, you don't have to have it.
Bellhousing bolts, flywheel, clutch, etc all are identical from 91-98, you can use whatever you get.
You'll need an S14 driveshaft, and the S14 speed sensor, if you using an S13 just swap the pinion gear.
Any 96-98 ECU will work, auto or manual, you'll just have various codes tripped depending on which one you use. Nothing that affects the car's operation though.

and for the speed sensor can I just sand-paper down the lips on the s14 speed sensor to make it fit on the s13 tranny?

and s13 wiring harnes..
-how does that match up to an s14?

Did you read anything above, or did you just forget how?

CPS is only for OBD-II diagnostics, there is no benefit either way. Having it will keep the CEL off, not having it will trip it.

Only 96-98 ECUs will work. You cannot use an S13 ECU, period. The plug is different, and the pins are all different.

You can sand the gear down but the time it takes to do it and the amount of continous test fitting could be avoided by just buying the corect gear. It's less than $20 new.

Lower harness is different between 13 and 14. Use a 14 harness or build your own from the auto harness.

with this much trouble just drop in the s13 ka and tranny while your at it , just wire it up , or maybe even just throw in and SR since your going to drop some money and time into it

remove pilot bearing
install clutch/flywheel
install tranny
install drive shaft
bleed lines

all the wiring is done
the pedal is in, the master cylinder is in,

that pilot bearing has me stuck.. gonna try drilling it out

go to kragen or autozone and rent a tool to pull out the pilot bearing. 5 minutes of work with the puller is way better than 20-30 minutes of drilling and cussing.
