S14 Speedometer Malfunction?
Okay so I bought my first car the other day and its a 96 zenki. The car isn't in the best shape cosmetically but mechanically it runs fine. Ok so enough of that, the speedo reads a way higher speed than I'm actually going and I have no idea why. Ex; Cruising in 5th going with traffic around 2500 rpm, the speedo tells me I'm doing 120. I don't know if the previous owner had larger wheels at one point or what, but I have no idea what I should do. I should probably also add that it has an S13 trans.

Umm, is the speedo maybe in Km/h instead mph? If it's consistent throughout, that could be the issue.
If you aren't sure- here is an easy way to tell: Get on mapmyrun.com and map out a 1-mile drive... Go to the starting point, reset the trip-meter to zero. Drive the route. If at the end of the mile, the trip timer reads 1.6(ish), your speedo is km/h. If you are sure that it's mph and malfunctioning, and operating smoolthly except for the wrong speed... you may want to ensure the correct speed sensor is installed. HOWEVER, in 5th gear @2,500-ish rpm sounds an awful lot like 65-70mph... If so, then the speedo is prolly km/h in which case you need to know this (not exact figures, but close enough to keep you from getting stopped for speeding): 20km/h = 15mph 40km/h = 25mph 60km/h = 35mph 70km/h = 40mph 80km/h = 50mph 90km/h = 55mph 100kn/h = 60mph 110km/h = 65mph 120km/h = 70mph 130km/h = 80mph Easiest way to do it is drop the 0 from the km/h, multiply by 6 and that's your 'approximate' mph.

incorrect/faulty speed sensor.
changing wheel/tire size shouldn't make that much of a difference. Odds are your s13 trans still has the s13 speed sensor. Make sure you get the s14 speed sensor, as an s13 won't match up properly with your cluster. s13 and s14 speed sensors are the same size, bolt in the same, they just send different electrical signals. Odds are when the previous owner did the swap they didn't replace that sensor. If there is no difference after replacing the speed sensor then your cluster might be going out.
