Transmission and differential oil - Use Silkolene?

Silkolene BOA 80W-90 Gear Oil- 1/2 LTR

http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/p.../Silkolene_Oil

According to the 240SX manual,

Transmission oil: GL-4
Differential oil: GL-5

Silkolene meets both GL-4 and GL-5 requirements.

I just bought a S13 and a weld diff.

Can I just use Silkolene oil for both the transmission and differential? I know most people will recommend Red Line MT-90 Manual Transmission Lubricant for the transmission, but I can save some money if I can just buy Silkolene oil for both the transmission and differential.

Thanks!

i would say not to use it in your transmission based on the fact that it says specifically for hypoid gears. That oil might decrease the life and function of your synchros. Now if you had a dogmission without synchros you could use that oil. That is the difference between gl-4 and gl-5 gear oil.

Why don't you just run LUCAS Gear oil (80W/90) from Autozone. They have that climbing additive and LSD friendly. I changed it on my VSLD and Tranny, it's very good. Also running Castrol GTX HighMileage 10w40 with OEM Nissan oil filter.

I think oem specs are 75w90. but 80w90 pretty close.

When doing the tranny and differential, make sure you use Teflon tape around the drain and filler bolts, just for a little extra seal.

Lucas oil is a reputable company and they are track proven. I would just go with something that is more convienient and reliable.

Silkolene is UK product and I dont' know much about them. I would use Lucas and GL-4 would be adequate on the differential. Regular gear oil in the tranny is fine.

I did answer his question..but you had an excellent suggstion, give them a call. I don't see how an oil can meet gl-4 and gl-5 at the same time because gl-5 is not suitable for yellow metals (aka synchros) but gl-4 is.
