I am trying to figure out why the starter in my 1995 240sx is not engaging with the flywheel. Do 240sx motors need shims for the starter? Every time I turn the key the starter activates but it's misaligned with the flywheel so I have to cycle the key numerous times before the engine stops.

Does it need shims, a new starter or a new flywheel??

Take off the starter and check out the teeth on the gear and the flywheel. There are no shims

I had a car like this once, I slackened off the starter bolts a bit then started the car a few times and it found its own place.
it could also be a sticky starter so you could strip and clean the throw out mechanism.
