i just changed the oil and im hearing a small knock. i only notice it when the cars idling. think its a lifter? the oil is castoral full synthetic 5w-30. it was recommended by my autos teacher and another 240 owner i know. anyway, think its anything i need to worry about?

You can try letting the vehicle get up to operating temperature and driving it around at about 3000-4000rpm for 15-20 min to let it bleed....if that doesn't work, you can take it out and stick a skinny scribe or needle in the hole of the lifter and keep compressing it until it won't compress anymore (i did it with lifter is submerged in bucket of oil). That'll isolate the lifters from causing the ticking noise.

ok. the only prob with that is i dont have the tools to take it out, or the time in school. anywere i can take it and get it done? ...and not get charged up the ass?

Good question. I don't really trust dealerships to touch my car, only for the fact that they always do rush jobs...not saying they're bad at it, but you could be back there for a stupid mistake that they made. At the same time, I really don't trust backyard shops unless it's a tuning shop that know your motor. The cheapest way is to buy the tools and do it yourself, but the quickest way is to take it to the dealership and let them diag the noise for you and fix it (the diag will cost you 1 hour labor time, but the fix will probably wind up costing you 2-3 hrs labor time plus a valve cover seal...so probably 3-4 hours times the labor rate plus valve cover gasket). If the car runs fine, but noisy....you could always just deal with it....up to you.

is it a sr if its a sr20 then you can just buy a lifter arm stopper if its ka i dont know.. LOL

It's probably a KA24DE since his profile says he has a '93 240sx and I think it says " lifter knock?" in the title of the original post.

Your just going to have to make time to get into the engine. Download the FSM from the 240sx Bible and troubleshoot it yourself. You will save a lot of money and have a better understanding of your car.

Either that or let someone else touch your car and get charged a lot of money, wait a long time for it to get fixed, or better yet, get charged a lot for unecessary work. It's up to you. May take you 1 or 2 hours, small price to pay considering your situation.

Ask any guy here on the forum. Buying tools to fix your own car is a good investment.

Some parts stores also allow you to borrow tools, for free! I have done this from Advanced Auto and Autozone, especially the tools you hardly use. Main thing is, when you return it, your deposit is refunded and you don't pay anything(as long as the tools are returned in good order).

i had it checked out and it wasn't a lifter. noisy injectors i guess. i unno. it runs fine still so w/e

but they found out i had a bad tie rod when the did my alignment. so that was cool i guess lol
